Image: Froch looks to recapture WBC title against AbrahamBy Scott Gilfoid: Former World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) will be hoping he can regain his loss WBC title against Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KO’s) in their stage 3 Super Six tourney match-up on November 27th at the Hartwall Arena, in Helsinki, Finland. Froch, 33, fought poorly in his last fight against Mikkel Kessler in April and lost his title by a narrow 12 round decision that Froch, oddly enough, still thinks he won.

Froch was hoping to get another shot against Kessler in order to try and regain his lost title by avenging the defeat. However, Kessler had to pull out of the tournament due to a lingering eye injury, and his WBC title, now vacant, will be up for grabs for Froch to try and capture on November 27th in his clash against Abraham.

It’s easier said than done for Froch to get the title back. Froch has looked horrible in his last three fights, barely beating Jermain Taylor last year, then winning what many boxing fans feel was a gift decision against Andre Dirrell while fighting in front of a large home audience in Nottingham, England. And finally, Froch’s luck ran out and he was unable to pull out the Kessler fight with a last second knockout to make up for his poor performance all fight long and the judges didn’t see things in his favor as they had in his questionable win over Dirrell.

As horrible as Froch has looked in his last three fights, he has a chance against Abraham because the Armenian fighter is coming off a mostly one-sided loss to the talented American Andre Dirrell last March, a fight in which Abraham was totally dominated in every sense of the word and ended up being disqualified in the 11th after he blasted Dirrell with a right hand to the head after Dirrell has slipped and fallen down on the canvas.

Abraham has a low work rate and this will give Froch a chance to win rounds by default if he’s able to land shots without getting his head taken off by the hard hitting Abraham. However, Abraham is likely going to be angry about losing to Dirrell, and will be looking to knock Froch out with every shot he throws.

Given that Froch basically has no defense because of his tendency to fight with his hands down by his sides all the time, Abraham is going to have the perfect opponent for him to score yet another knockout. I wouldn’t be surprised if this fight doesn’t go past six rounds, because Froch is so perfect for Abraham. It’s like a soccer player getting a free shot on goal with the goalie out of the net and sitting on the sidelines. Unless Froch makes some changes to his mostly nonexistent defense, I see him getting knocked into next year by Abraham.
