Fillingham’s View – Carl Froch vs. Arthur Abraham

By Adam Fillingham: Carl “the Cobra” Froch claimed his WBC super middleweight belt back in a fantastic contest on Saturday night, with a win over the German power house Arthur Abraham. Froch seems to have improved tenfold since his last bout against the Danish warrior Mikkel Kessler.

I was very impressed with Froch’s boxing skills that night. Instead of his usual toe to toe brawling style (which I admit is a great watch, but didn’t do him justice as a fighter) he used his boxing brain to tag Abraham to both the body and head with hooks and jabs.

Froch in my opinion did not lose a round all night (although I gave Abraham a share of the final round) and how could he with a static German that only moved when he was being doubled up by Froch’s body blows.

For all Froch did right, Abraham was horrid. He stood in the centre of the ring with his hands held high not protecting his body. As soon as Froch targeted Abraham’s body his hands and arms dropped leaving his head wide open to Froch’s powerful jabs and hooks. A big downside to Abraham’s game plan was his extremely short arms which Froch used to his advantage well.

Before this fight I was not one of Carl’s biggest fans. I like the man himself but his fighting style didn’t please me. Saturday night Froch made my day by proving me wrong that it would be a 50/50 fight. The fight was defiantly not 50/50 it was 100/0 to Froch.

Now for the bad part. There are some questions that need to be asked and answered. Was Froch very good or did Abraham make him look good? Will Froch be dragged into a fight if he is in with a brawler such as Glen Johnson (who he faces next)? How long can Froch’s chin be used as his primary defence? These questions I hope will be answered by the end of the super six tournament.

So in conclusion Carl Froch put on a masterful performance against a world class opponent in Arthur Abraham, but how long will this new froch last? Let’s wait and see.
