Wladimir Klitschko: “My former sparring partner Monte Barrett knocked him [Haye] down”

By William Mackay: IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) had a good time making fun of WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (24-1, 22 KO’s) the other day on Sky Sports Ringside, pointing out how Haye had been knocked down in his heavyweight bout against 38-year-old journeyman Monte Barrett in 2008. Wladimir said “There’s a chance that Audley Harrison can knock David out. My former sparring partner Monte Barrett knocked him down and David had to get on his knee to recover.” That was bizarre fight where after Barrett knocked Haye down with a left hand to the head, the British referee ruled that it was a slip despite it being a clean punch to that head that caused Haye to go down.

Also on the same show, the Rinside commentators took some time to show Haye training with someone wearing a heavy pad. The commentators wanted to watch more of Haye hitting the pad, but Wladimir cut in, saying “This is boring. A walking heavy bag he’s [Haye] punching.” Wladimir obviously thought this was a silly way to train from the sound of his voice. Wladimir’s training is much different than Haye, a blend of Eastern European and American training.

Wladimir is worried about Haye getting knocked out by his next opponent Harrison next month, which would ruin much of the interest in a fight between Haye and Wladimir or his brother Vitali Klitschko. Haye is looking to get in another fight before supposedly taking on one or both of the Klitschko brothers before retiring next year by his 31st birthday. However, even if Haye does get by Harrison that doesn’t mean that Haye is going to take on Wladimir or his brother. Haye doesn’t seem to be in any kind of rush to fight the Klitschko brothers and by the way that he’s talking recently, it doesn’t appear that either of the Klitschkos are up next after Haye gets finished with the Harrison bout.
