Image: Warren thinks Khan isn't ready for Mayweather Jr.By Sean McDaniel: Frank Warren thinks WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) isn’t ready for a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. at this early point in Khan’s boxing career. Warren should know better than anyone, since he’s the one that has promoted Khan for most of his pro career up until recently when Khan moved over to Golden Boy Promotions. In an article at Thesun.co.uk, Warren said “Khan is making a name at light welterweight, but it is a good division and he has not proved he is number #1 yet. To fight Mayweather he might have to go to light middleweight, which would put him at a severe disadvantage.”

Whether Khan fights Mayweather at light middleweight, welterweight or light welterweight, I think Khan would be in way over his head just because Mayweather has so much more ability than Khan. The two fighters are far apart in class. Warren thinks Khan needs more experience before taking on a guy like Mayweather. Maybe if Khan can beat his next opponent Marcos Maidana and then the winner of the Timothy Bradley vs. Devon Alexander bout, he then might be ready for a fight against Mayweather.

He’d still likely lose badly, but at least you couldn’t say that Khan didn’t have the experience to fight him. He’d get that by fighting Maidana and Bradley or Alexander in back to back fights. Even if Khan loses badly to Mayweather, he still would gain a lot because of the attention his fight with Mayweather would get form around the world. That’s a good thing for Khan.
