Khan vs. Maidana: Will Marcos ruin Amir’s dreams of greatness?

By William Mackay: In recent weeks, WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) has been dreaming of a future fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and seeing himself beating Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KO’s) and the winner of the Devon Alexander vs. Timothy Bradley bout last year.

It’s all well and good that Khan has dreams of facing Mayweather, but the last thing that Khan needs to be thinking about is Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao or the Bradley-Alexander winner. Khan’s fans are completely sold on him, forgetting completely that he was stopped in the 1st round last time he took on a slugger two years ago in a loss to Breidis Prescott.

They, like Khan, see him as having improved as a fighter and having acquired a better chin by moving up in weight. That would be a nice to have if there was any proof behind it. I could understand Khan and his fans getting excited about Khan if he had beaten another slugger in the past two years and proved that he can take a huge shot on the chin without folding again.

However, what Khan and his fans fail to see is who Khan has been matched with since the Prescott loss. It’s no accident that Khan has fought nothing but light to moderate punchers since then. Andriy Kotelnik, Marco Antonio Barrera, Dmitri Salita, Oisin Fagan and Paulie Malignaggi are not big punchers.

In fact, I’d go so far as to say they’re more in the direction of being weak punchers. This is why Khan is in the position of looking really silly if Maidana knocks him out on December 11th when they fight at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

With all the talk that khan has made abut knocking Maidana out, about being a better fighter than him and about fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. by the end of next year, it will all seem like a big joke. I’m sure Khan’s loyal fans will stick by his side and have a ready made excuse to explain away the loss and to help him save face.
