Chavez Jr. vs. Gomez card to go for $44.95 on PPV

By Chris Williams: The December 4th card with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) defending his obscure WBC Silver middleweight title against welterweight Alfonso Gomez (22-4-2, 11 KO’s) will go for a reported $44.95. The fight will be taking place at the Honda Center, in Anaheim, California. On the undercard, Nonito Donaire will be facing Wladimir Sidorenko, and WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto will be taking on contender Urbano Antillon, and rounding out the card will be lightweight contender Brandon Rios vs. Noe Bolanos. I know boxing is a subjective thing for fans, but I don’t know that this card is worth me paying $44.95. There needs to be more flexibility when purchasing these expensive PPV cards. Like letting boxing fans have the options of paying to see some of the fights while ignoring others. For example, I’ll pay $4.99 to watch the Chavez-Gomez fight and they can leave off the Rios-Bolanos, Donaire-Sidorenko and Soto-Antillon fights. I’m not interested in those fights.

It appears that there will only be one world championship bout on the card and that’s the fight between Soto and Antillon, but that’s not quite as interesting as it might seem because Antillon was stopped in the 9th round last year by Miguel Acosta. So basically, we’re getting Soto against a guy that was recently beaten. Boy, that’s really appealing. And Donaire is facing former World Boxing Association (WBA) bantamweight champion Wladimir Sidorenko, who has lost two out of his last three fights. What good is that?

I have to pay to see both of these fights with guys that were recently beaten? Why not match Soto with Acosta, the guy that whipped Antillon, and put Donaire in with someone that can punch like Hugo Cazares. I’d like to see that fight, but not Donaire against a guy that has lost two out of his last three fights and who can’t punch his way out of a wet paper bag. I wouldn’t mind watching this mismatch if it were for free, but not for $44.95. And the main event between Chavez Jr. and Gomez isn’t interesting either.

Chavez isn’t a world champion, hasn’t fought anyone yet but the weak-punching John Duddy, who I don’t even see as a 1st tier fighter, and seems to have been brought along incredibly slowly with his career. To pay $44.95 on PPV for Chavez, who holds the WBC Silver middleweight title, seems insane as far as I’m concerned. Shouldn’t boxing fans have to pay that kind of money for bouts involving huge stars and fighters that actually hold a world title?

I would gladly pay to see Chavez Jr. fight if he had already beaten Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, Paul Williams, Sergio Martinez, Dmitri Pirog, Gennady Golovkin, Felix Sturm or James Kirkland. The problem is Chavez hasn’t beaten those guys yet, and I don’t think he ever will. Since his one big win of his career has come against fringe contender John Duddy, why should I have to pay $44.95 to see him fight? I think this card should be discounted to $4.99 given the lack of champions on the card and lack of what appears to be competitive fights.
