By Jason Kim: If 39-year-old Shane Mosley (46-6, 39 KO’s) to have any chance in his September 18th fight against former WBC junior middleweight champion Sergio Mora (22-1-1, 6 KO’s), he’s going to have to try do it early before he runs out of gas because Mora is a fighter that can move and jab all night long without tiring.

Mosley, on the other hand, is starting to show his advanced age and will probably be only dangerous in the early rounds of the fight. After that, Mosley is likely to run out of steam very quickly and get badly out-boxed similar to the way he was in his last fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 1st of this year.

Mora and Mosley will be meeting at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. This is a make it or break it fight for Mosley because of his age and the fact that he looked so bad in his one-sided 12 round unanimous decision loss to Mayweather in his last fight. The weird about that fight was that Mosley had looked so good one year earlier against the painfully slow Antonio Margarito, but against Mayweather, Mosley all of a sudden looked old and depleted. It goes like that sometimes in boxing.

Fighters can age real well for a while in then in a matter of months, they look like they’ve age ten years in the ring. I’m not sure if that’s the case for Mosley, but I have strong feeling that he’s lost it and is no longer the guy that beat Margarito in 2009. That year off from boxing seems to have done a number on Mosley and slowed him down and taken away his stamina.

It’s never a good thing to do to take a lot of time off from boxing when you get up there in age like Mosley. But Mosley also hasn’t helped himself in this fight by choosing a runner like Mora. Sergio has got to be one of the most difficult fighters to beat style-wise in the junior middleweight division.

He’s not the kind of fighter that Mosley has traditionally done well against. Mosley tends to fight at his best against Mexican fighters that come straight at him and try to run him down with power shots. Mosley has problems against fighters that move, use their jab a lot and counter punch. Mora does all those thing quite well.

If Mosley loses this fight, he’s going to have to take a good look in the mirror and decide whether it’s worth it to carry on and continue to struggle against the younger fighters in the sport.

I can’t see Mayweather fighting him again and I don’t see Manny Pacquiao ever fighting him, especially if Mosley loses to Mora. A loss to Mora is going to likely kill a lot of potential fights that Mosley would like.
