Mora comes in three pounds over the weight limit for Mosley bout

By Dan Ambrose: Sergio Mora (22-1-1, 6 KO’s), the former World Boxing Council junior middleweight champion, weighed in at three pounds over the junior middleweight limit of 154 today at the weigh-in for his fight against 39-year-old former three division world champion Shane Mosley (46-6, 39 KO’s) for their bout on Saturday at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California.

Mora, 29, weighed in at 157 for the fight, while Mosley cane in right on the mark of the upper limit at 154. What this means is that Mora will lose 20% of his purse, which might be a big deal for him if he doesn’t turn around and beat Mosley.

If Mora needed a reason to beat Mosley, he now has a good one. At the same time, this gives Mosley an excuse in case Mora dominates and beats him. Of course, it will be hard to buy any excuses from Mosley if he looks as bad as he did in his last fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. last May.

In that fight, Mosley stopped throwing punches after the 2nd round and just looked tired and old for the remainder of the fight. Mosley later said that his neck was hurting him and that was why he wasn’t throwing punches. Thus far, Mosley hasn’t said anything about his neck bothering him, so you have to assume that he won’t be using that as a reason to explain away a loss to Mora on Saturday night.

According to boxing news from Dan Rafael of ESPN, Mora said that he had weighed himself on the hotel scale and he had weighed in within the limits. Mora thinks that the scale used to weigh him for the fight wasn’t right. Additionally, Vivian Harris and Carlos Baldomir also came in overweight for their fights.

Mora lost the three bouts after an hour, but he will still be fined and lose 20%. Apparently, Mosley’s camp still wanted Mora to lose the weight, even though he was going to be fined regardless. It’s hard to understand that, since he’s already losing the money.

But I guess Mora will be weaker for having taken off that weight, and maybe Mosley will have a better chance of winning the fight. It’s too bad there isn’t a back-up scale that can be used in cases like this. With three fighters coming in over the weight for their fights, you have to wonder whether the scale was working correctly or not.

Baldomir, 39, will be facing Saul Alvarez, and Vivian Harris will be taking on Victor Ortiz.
