Gamboa vs. Salido mismatch on Saturday

Image: Gamboa vs. Salido mismatch on SaturdayBy Chris Williams: In what will almost surely be another mismatch bout for Yurirokis Gamboa (18-0, 15 KO’s), he will be putting his World Boxing Association featherweight title on the line in a unification match against IBF featherweight champion Orlando Salido (34-10-2, 22 KO’s) on Saturday night at the Palms Casino Resort, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This isn’t the fight that boxing fans want to see Gamboa in, but they’re going to have to settle for that until their mutual promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank is willing to match them up against each other. It seems like a no brainer. If Arum is willing to put his fighters Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito and Joshua Clottey, in with Manny Pacquiao, then he should put Gamboa in with Lopez already.

Salido, 29, has been fighting at the pro level since 1996 and had little luck with his career until the last five years when he improved beat fighters like Robert Guerrero and Cristobal Cruz. However, none of those guys are anything like what he’s going to be facing on Saturday night against the 28-year-old Gamboa.

This is going to be a slaughter and I can’t get motivated about this fight. Salido may have a title but it doesn’t mean much because of all the titles in every division. He’s not nearly the best fighter in the featherweight division and I don’t see him being any competition in this fight. If Gamboa takes his time, Salido will last six rounds at best.

If Gamboa rushes things, look for Salido to fall in one or two rounds. I’ve seen a number of Salido’s fights and he’s painfully slow and utterly hittable. In other words, the perfect opponent for Gamboa to destroy and look against. The fight will be the main event of HBO’s telecast featuring Antonio Peterson vs. Brando Rios, Matt Korobov vs. Anthony Greenidge, Jose Benavidez vs. Manuiel Delcid and Mike Lee vs. Alex Rivera.

I like the undercard a lot more than I do the main event. Hopefully, they start matching Gamboa against some interesting opponents after this fight because this is really boring to see him put in against dull opponents.
