Image: Froch says his fight with Abraham will be for the WBC super middleweight titleBy Scott Gilfoid: Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) has lucked out in his next fight against Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KO’s) on October 2nd, at the Chapiteau de Fontvieille, Principauté de Monaco, Monaco. Instead of this bout just being the Super Six tournament semifinal bout with the loser being eliminated from the Super Six tourney, Froch will have a chance to win back his World Boxing Council super middleweight title that he just lost in his last fight against Mikkel Kessler by a 12 round unanimous decision on April 24th. It certainly as easier job facing Abraham than it would be a fighter that just finished beating him like Kessler. In an article at thesun.co.uk, Froch says “This fight with Abraham will be fro the WBC title and will be straight semifinal in the Super Six. It’s good news for me. There’s me and Abraham left, while Ward vs. Dirrell is the other semi. So in the final you’ll have a WBC-WBA unification fight. After the final, Kessler’s got a shot at the WBC crown.”

I kind of doubt that Kessler will go ahead take on the winner of the Super Six tournament, even that’s what he said he wants to do. With his jacked up eye, the last thing Kessler is going to want to do after nine months of doing nothing is take on Dirrell or Ward and get pounded on again for his troubles. Froch needs to put that idea out of his mind and just think about trying not to get flattened by Abraham in October. Worrying himself about titles that he’ll likely never possess is such a pointless thing for Froch to be doing. Those belts will rest in the hands of Dirrell or Ward by the end of the Super Six tournament and that’s just the way it’s going to be.

What Froch needs to do, besides dreaming about lost titles and such, is to try and look good in whatever happens in the Abraham fight. At least if Froch looks good in getting knocked out, he won’t lost as much cache than he would if he fought like a timid rabbit and got knocked out. Froch looked horrible in his last fight against Kessler, like someone who was afraid to get knocked out. He let Kessler be the aggressor during most of the fight and ended up losing the majority of the exchanges. Froch can’t be a rabbit against Abraham. He’s got to take the fight to Abraham the same way that Dirrel in his win over Abraham in March. That’s how you beat Abraham. You can’t be fighting off your back foot for 12 rounds and beat a guy like Abraham.

Froch says “Abraham and I are fighting for my old title. It means I’ll be the world champion assuming I do the job properly and Kessler would get a shot at challenging for the his old belt back because he vacated it.” And then again, Froch could get knocked out by Abraham and be left slinking home to Nottingham having been beaten yet again. I see that scenario having a better chance of happening than Froch winning back his WBC title.
