Margarito’s suspension only cost him one fight

Image: Margarito's suspension only cost him one fightBy Jason Kim: As Yahoo Sports writer Kevin Iole points out, the one year suspension that Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KO’s) just finished serving for being found with loaded hand wraps cost him to miss only fight. Margarito, 32, had been fighting twice a year up until the suspension in 2009. However, Margarito was still able to fight once before the suspension in his 9th round TKO loss to Shane Mosley in January 2009, and then has fought once in 2010 in a fight in Mexico against Roberto Garcia while still suspended.

Now Margarito is poised to fight for a second time in 2010 in his November 13th fight against Manny Pacquiao at the Cowboy Stadium, in Arlington, Texas. For a suspension as serious as the one that Margarito experienced, he got off pretty lightly and is going to be rewarded after all of that with the fight against Pacquiao. What a way to bounce back.

Margarito is helped by the fact that he’s promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank, who likes to match his fighters up against each other. Since Arum doesn’t have a whole lot of other options in his stable to match against Pacquiao besides Miguel Cotto, Vanes Martirosyan and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Margarito is getting the shot because he’s the better option right now.

Cotto already had his chance at was blown out in a 12th round knockout last November. But never fear, Cotto will get another chance against Pacquiao next year. Why? I have no clue. I guess because there are some fans out there that will continue to purchase this fight regardless of how decisive it was the first time around. It’s like going to see the same movie repeatedly.

Some people do that and this why a second Cotto-Pacquiao fight will likely do well. It’s one of those match-ups that probably could happen over and over again and still do well even after a lot of other boxing fans have long become sick and disgusted with what’s taking place.

But Margarito didn’t really have that much of a penalty for his hand wrap issue when you look at what he lost in terms of fights. The time off from boxing may have actually saved Margarito from getting beaten by someone good. He looked terrible in his loss against Mosley last year and didn’t look much better in his recent win over Garcia. If Margarito had been put in with a quality fighter like Alfredo Angulo during the past year, there’s a good chance that Margarito would have lost yet again.
