Image: Ex-Pacquiao trainer thinks Donaire can win 6 world titles before he eventually retires - NewsBy Chris Williams: Former Manny Pacquiao trainer Rick Stehely feels that super flyweight Nonito Donaire (24-1, 16 KO’s) can eventually win six world titles in separate weight divisions, according to Ronnie Nathanielsz at Philboxing.com Given that Donaire is 27-years-old now and has only won one title, the International Boxing Federation flyweight belt, I’d say there’s a good chance Donaire won’t even come close to reaching that prediction. Pacquiao has won world titles in seven different weight divisions, which he’s been able to do because of all the numerous weight classes that the sanctioning bodies have created.

It’s possible that Donaire can accomplish this feat, because all the different titles are watered down because of the different belts, but still not likely because he’s skinny and not as powerful or as fast as Pacquiao. Donaire is looking to move up in weight and take on WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel in his next fight. That’s definitely a winnable fight for Donaire but far from a sure thing. Donaire had big problems against bantamweight Rafael Concepcion last year and took a lot of punishment from him in winning an unimpressive 12 round decision in August of 2009.

Montiel just turned around last month and destroyed Concepcion in three easy rounds. This may not mean anything, but it does show you how dangerous a puncher Montiel is. But even if Donaire is able to beat Montiel, Donaire would still have to win titles in the junior featherweight, featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight divisions for him to reach the milestone of winning six world titles in different divisions. Somehow, I just can’t see Donaire beating the likes of Juan Manuel Marquez, Humberto Soto, Juan Manuel Lopez, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Roman Martinez or Celestino Caballero.

Of course, those are the best fighters in different weight classes, and Donaire wouldn’t have to necessarily face them in order to pick up easy titles. For example, Pacquiao hasn’t taken on fighters that were considered to be the very best when he won titles in the lightweight division or the welterweight division. At the time that Pacquiao won those titles, he beat David Diaz for the WBC lightweight belt and Miguel Cotto for the WBO welterweight title. Neither of these fighters was considered to be the very best fighter in the division at the time that Pacquiao fought them. As such, it’s possible with careful match-making for Donaire to win titles in six different divisions but he has to be careful who he fights and he has to move quickly and not stick around one division for any length of time before moving up in weight.

The bad thing is that Donaire could fail eventually and possibly mess up his body by putting on extra weight. He could very well miss out on a division that he would have a better chance at dominating at for a stretch of time. By moving up in weight constantly, Donaire wouldn’t have time to fight the fight all the best fighters in the division before having to move up. The plus is that Donaire would be well respected if he could accomplish this, even if he fought the lesser champions in each division that he moved up to.
