Image: Dawson says he’ll knock Pascal out if he tries to rush himBy Matt Stein: Light heavyweight Chad Dawson (29-0, 17 KO’s) will be looking to recapture the WBC light heavyweight title on Saturday night against champion Jean Pascal (25-1, 16 KO’s) at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada. Pascal, 27, says he’s going to take the fight to Dawson and try to throw him off his game and knock him out. However, Dawson, a boxer/puncher with hand speed and a fighting style very similar to Floyd Mayweather Jr., says this in an article at Sportsillustrated.cnn.com: If he [Pascal] plans on coming in and charging, he falls right into my game plan. He comes at me like that I will knock him out.” Dawson may have to knock Pascal out, because will most definitely be coming at Dawson all night long looking to take his head off.

That’s how Pascal fights and why he’s so exciting to watch. Pascal’s chin isn’t the best, though, as he was hurt in his fight against Omar Pittman and also hurt by Carl Froch in 2008. Pascal beat Pittman, but lost a 12 round decision to Froch. However, Froch met Pascal power for power and traded big shots with him for 12 rounds until he ultimately wore Pascal down. Dawson isn’t known for throwing a lot of punches nor is he the type of fighter that’s going to be looking to stand toe-to-toe for 12 rounds.

Instead, the southpaw Dawson uses his quickness to mostly outclass his opponents. Dawson does have good power and if he has someone that has a vulnerable chin and an aggressive fighting style, Dawson can certainly take them out in a hurry. If Pascal gets reckless, Dawson will make him pay big time. Dawson will have the size advantage of two inches in height and four inches in reach over the 5’11” Pascal. This means that Pascal is going to have to try and get in close if he wants to land his shots, because Dawson isn’t one of those fighters that gives up his height and reach by standing in close and trading.

Pascal is going to be meeting Dawson’s jab for the most part, and he’s going to be dealing with a constantly moving target for most of the night. Dawson does stand and trade at times, but only when he wants to and not when his opponent does. Dawson has a way of lulling his opponents to sleep by pecking away at them with jabs and single shots for awhile. Suddenly, Dawson will break from the routine and throw a flurry of power shots that sometimes catches his opponents off guard and not prepared for the sudden burst of power.

When he wants to, Dawson can be a murderous puncher and his blazing fast hand speed makes him even more dangerous during those brief times. Pascal may bring out that part of Dawson on Saturday night if he presses him enough and makes him angry. If the fight turns into a boxing match, then Pascal has little chance of winning because Dawson is the better fighter with the superior boxing skills.
