By Eric Thomas: According to Fightnews.com, unbeaten number #1 rated WBC middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) may choose not to fight on September 11th against Pawel Wolak due to trainer issues that are giving Chavez problems. Although Chavez still may fight on September 11th, it’s still not certain. If not, then Chavez Jr. will instead wait until December 4th for his big money bout against World Boxing Association junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto instead.

It makes sense, because Wolak is a very good fighter and a clear step up from John Duddy, Chavez’s last opponent on June 26th. Wolak would have had an excellent chance of beating Chavez and thus ruining his chance for a big payday against Cotto. Chavez Jr. is a good fighter but he looks more like a fringe contender rather than a world class guy. But that won’t prevent him from getting a big payday against Cotto on December 4th.

Boxing fans of Chavez’s father Julio Cesar Chavez will likely be purchasing the Cotto-Chavez fight in droves on pay per view and the attendance at the fight will likely be very high as well. It doesn’t matter than Chavez’s best opponent during his career was the fringe middleweight contender Duddy, because Chavez is still popular among Mexican boxing fans despite his lack of credible opponents.

Chavez was originally being looked at as opponent for Kelly Pavlik at the Cowboy Stadium. However, Top Rank management didn’t like that fight and decided to not move on it. Next, Wolak was chosen as an opponent for Chavez. I had a strong suspicion that fight wouldn’t happen either because Wolak can punch and is much more of a slugger than Duddy.

I would have respected Chavez had he taken that fight, but I didn’t think it would happen because Wolak is far too dangerous to risk a fighter like Chavez. I’m hoping I’m going to be wrong about this, but it’s looking like Chavez won’t be fighting on September 11th. As such, Chavez will rest up and wait for his big money bout against Cotto on December 4th. Chavez probably has zero hopes of beating a quality fighter like Cotto, even though Cotto is very beatable.
