Is Froch wasting his time worrying about finding the perfect venue for the Abraham bout?

Image: Is Froch wasting his time worrying about finding the perfect venue for the Abraham bout?By William Mackay: Former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) has been a hard one to please recently after losing his last fight to Mikkel Kessler by a 12 round decision on April 24th. Froch thought he should have been given the decision in the Kessler fight. Few people agree with Froch unfortunately for him. Froch is now facing Arthur Abraham in the stage 3 part of the Super Six tournament and Froch is less than happy that he won’t be able to fight Abraham in Nottingham, England, where Froch fights most of his bouts.

Froch rejected Germany as a venue for his fight with Abraham, and is also saying he doesn’t want to fight anywhere in Europe other the UK. The recent talk is of Froch fighting Abraham in Montreal, Canada, where neither he nor Abraham would have any advantage with the judges. It seems a bit much to have a fight take place all the way in Canada, because there has to be another location closer to the home countries of Abraham and Froch that would please both fighters.

However, Froch may be wasting his time worrying so much about the venue of the fight. Abraham is a devastating puncher who nearly decapitated his last two opponents Jermain Taylor and Andre Dirrell. Froch prides himself on his ability to take hard shots without going down or getting knocked out. However, Froch has been hurt in his last three fights. So that suggests that Froch might be overestimating the strength of his chin.

And he also could be fooling himself by worrying so much about the venue of the fight against Abraham. Realistically, there’s a very good chance that Abraham will win by knockout. That’s how Abraham usually wins most of his fights and the few opponents that made it out of a fight against him without getting knocked out had excellent boxing skills.

Froch isn’t a great boxer, doesn’t move well, has poor defense and equally poor hand speed. It would seem that Froch is made to order for a big puncher like Abraham. Froch won’t be able to run from him, because Abraham will catch up to the slow moving Froch before long and land one of his huge decapitating shots. But the way I see it, if Abraham wins the fight, which is highly likely given his huge power, he’ll either knock Froch completely out or beat him so bad that no one will question the decision afterwards, least of all Froch.

If Froch winds up with a broken beak, two black eyes and both lips busted, I kind of doubt that Froch will be complaining about being ripped off after the fight. I can’t be sure about that, because I saw Froch losing to both Kessler and Dirrell, and Froch believes he won both fights. But I think Froch is really kidding himself if he thinks he could end up losing a questionable decision if he doesn’t the perfect venue to fight Abraham at.

I almost wish Abraham would just let Froch have his own way by fighting Froch in Nottingham just so Froch would be happy and would finally agree to a venue. But then Abraham would be putting himself in a situation where he could wind up like Dirrell and lost a questionable decision, so I can understand why Abraham wouldn’t want to fight Froch in Nottingham after seeing that fight.
