Green has pressure on him in Ward fight

By Jason Kim: Allan Green (29-1, 20 KO’s) starts off the Super Six tournament already behind because he’s replacing Jermain Taylor, who had zero points at the time he left the tournament. Green, 30, will be facing the younger Andre Ward (21-0, 13 KO’s) on June 19th at the Oracle Arena, in Oakland. Green realizes he’s slightly in a hole because of lack of points but is trying to see it a different way, saying “I’m not coming into this tournament thinking about points. I’m thinking about victories. With victories come points. I don’t want to put more pressure on myself than I already have.”

Green may not want to think about points, but the reality is if he loses this fight to Ward on the 19th, then Green won’t have to worry about points anymore because he won’t be making it to the semi finals of the Super Six tourney. Green would then be looking to at least salvage his last fight of the tournament against Mikkel Kessler and perhaps act in the role of a spoiler by possibly beating Kessler and preventing him from making it to the semi finals.

However, based on Green’s lack of experience against quality opposition during his eight-year pro career, the chances of him beating either Ward or Kessler would seem remote at best. Green, unfortunately, has been chosen by the Super Six as a replacement for Taylor but Green hasn’t faced quality opposition during his career. His record is impressive at 29-1, to be sure, but Green has basically fought two decent fighters and lost one and won one. Against the best opposition that Green has faced, his record is 1-1.

Even worse, Green didn’t look good against these fighters – Edison Miranda and Tarvis Simms – and was beaten by Miranda. That’s not exactly impressive going into the Super Six tournament where Green will immediately be facing Ward, who may be the best fighter in the entire super middleweight division. This fight has the markings of a mismatch. For it not to turn into a mismatch, Green has got to show a lot more than he did in his fights against Simms and Miranda, because he didn’t look anything close to being a Super Six caliber fighter in those two fights.

Green still has some power, but not as good as his record would have you believe. Some boxing fans think that Green can beat Ward, because they’ve impressed with Green’s wins in the past when he’s been shown on cable. The thing that some fans are overlooking is that those fights were mismatches going in, as Green, who is clearly a good fighter, was pitted against guys that were clearly 2nd tier.

Green does have power, but he needs to put his punches together, throw a lot of bombs and hope for the best if he’s going to have any kind of chance at beating Ward. Green has got to fight a lot better than he’s done in his fights against Simms and Miranda, because he looked very average in both fights.
