Fury says he’ll retire if he loses to McDermott on June 25th

By Sean Mcdaniel: Undefeated Tyson Fury (10-0, 8 KO’s) has a lot on the line in his June 25th rematch against Big John McDermott (25-6, 16 KO’s) at the Brentwood Centre, Brentwood, Essex. Not only will the 22-year-old Fury be fighting for the vacant British heavyweight title, but he’ll also have his boxing career on the line for the fight. In an article at the Dailystar.co.uk, Fury has this to say about his fight against McDermott: “If I’m any good I will beat McDermott, sparring or no sparring. If I lose to McDermott I will pack my gloves up and get a job. I don’t want to box at a lower level – what’s the point? It’s make-or-break for me. If I can’t get past John McDermott, I can’t go beyond domestic level.”

Fury might want to start looking around for a job right now, because he looked absolutely horrible in his last fight against McDermott last year in September 2009. Fury won that fight by a 10 round referee’s decision by the scores 98-92. However, few boxing fans or writers thought that Fury won. And sad as it is to say, Fury doesn’t even appear to be the best heavyweight on the domestic level.

McDermott looks better, as does Sam Sexton and David Price. The 6’8” Fury appears to be a level below those fighters in ability right now. He is young, but the kind of flaws he showed in his fight against McDermott last time would seem to suggest that Fury has a long ways to go before he can ever be considered more than just a domestic level fighter. Fury was tagged early and often by McDermott on their last fight, and only seemed capable of throwing jabs and weak power shots. McDermott, who is not a huge puncher, looked like Mike Tyson compared to Fury.

Fury needs to find some power and learn to use his height and reach. Last time, he allowed McDermott to crowd him and land punishing shots without doing anything to keep on the outside. Fury probably needs a better trainer who knows how to work with tall fighters.
