Froch says he won’t fight Abraham anywhere in Europe but England

Image: Froch says he won't fight Abraham anywhere in Europe but EnglandBy William Mackay: Former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) still isn’t giving up on the idea of his next Super Six fight taking place in England. Froch, 32, says he wouldn’t mind fighting Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KO’s) in London or Manchester, England. In an article at Thesun.com, Froch says “I’m more than happy to go to Canada because all I want is a fair crack. I won’t fight anywhere in Europe unless it’s in Britain. They’re looking at a neutral venue. It’s my turn to fight at home [Froch talking about Nottingham] and I’m not fighting Abraham in Germany. London or Manchester [both in England] would be class as a neutral venue because I’m from Nottingham, and of course I would be for the fight to take place there.”

Abraham, on the other hand, wants the fight to take place in his adopted country of Germany, and doesn’t want to fight Froch in Britain where Froch has already won a controversial 12 round split decision over Andre Dirrell last October. It’s unknown how Abraham feels about fighting Froch in Canada. That would seem like an odd place for the Froch-Abraham fight to take place because neither Abraham nor Froch likely have much of a fan base there.

I could see this as a move that would help Froch at some point in the future because he would be getting visibility from the Canadian boxing fans and Froch could use the attention to help sell a fight against IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute once the Super Six tournament has been completed. It is disappointing that Froch is now not only saying he doesn’t want to fight Abraham in Germany, but he’s also saying all of Europe, except for Britain.

When you exclude every country but Britain, it’s kind of selling all these countries short. Certainly, you would think that Froch could win a decision in at least one of the countries in Europe, don’t you think? Froch seems different since being defeated by Mikkel Kessler in a 12 round unanimous decision on April 24th. Froch, once comfortable about fighting any fighter in their backyard, now appears overly cautious about fighting away from his home city of Nottingham.

Froch thinks he should have won the decision over Kessler and believes things would have been different had the fight taken place in Nottingham. Even thought there are perhaps an overwhelming amount of people who think that Kessler rightfully won the fight, Froch still thinks he would have won if the bout had taken place in Nottingham. It’s hard to blame Froch for thinking this.

Indeed, Froch probably would have won the fight but that might not have been a good thing given that he had already beaten Dirrell by what many boxing fans felt was a home town decision. If Froch had won two controversial decisions during the Super Six tournament, he would be perhaps looked at differently. As things are now, Froch may be better off that the fight took place outside of Nottingham.

Another thing, it seems strange that Froch seems to be calling the shots as if he’s still a champion. I wonder if Froch is having a hard time letting go of his former status as champion. Usually when a fighter loses their title, they can no longer throw their weight around so much. However, in Froch’s case, he’s been threatening to pull out of the Super Six tournament if he’s unhappy with the location of the fight. This gives Froch a lot more power than he would normally have.
