Image: Klitschko-Sosnowski: Will Vitali step it up after destroying Sosnowski on May 29thBy Dave Lahr: Incredibly, ticket sales are reportedly doing really well for the mismatch between World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (39-2, 37 KO’s) and his horribly over-matched opponent Alberto Sosnowski (45-2-1, 27 KO’s) for May 29th at the Veltins Arena, Gelsenkirchin, in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Klitschko, 38, has found a soft touch in 31-year-old 12 ranked WBC contender Sosnowski. This fight has 2nd round knockout written all over it, but incredibly the German boxing fans are scoping up tickets for this mismatch in droves, as if the fight was a compelling one instead of the mismatch that it appears to be.

It may be that after interesting bouts against Samuel Peter, Juan Carlos Gomez, Chris Arreola and Kevin Johnson, Vitali wanted an easy fight. But couldn’t he have found someone a little better than this? I would have liked for Vitali, if he was dead set on fighting an easy opponent, to select someone like Tomasz Adamek, James Toney or Denis Boytsov rather than Sosnowki. Those fights would at least be semi interesting for American boxing fans. However, once Vitali gets Sosnowski out of the way, Vitali will step up again and start facing better opponents again.

It’s just sad that Vitali chose to waste his non mandatory defense against Sosnowski rather than a more interesting opponent. Klitschko will likely have to defend his title against the winner of Odlanier Solis and Nikolay Valuev. If Solis emerges as the winner, it would be a good fight for Vitali. At 6’1’, the 270 Solis would be little more than a younger version of Danny Williams and will have no chance, but the fight will at least be somewhat interesting while it lasts. I doubt that Valuev will beat Solis, but if he does, a Valuev-Klitschko fight will be a horrible mismatch, about as bad as Vitali-Sosnowki. I wouldn’t want to see it. Valuev would have no chance.
