Image: Cintron wants an immediate rematch with WilliamsBy William Mackay: Former IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron (32-3-1, 28 KO’s) wants a rematch with Paul Williams (39-1, 27 KO’s) after losing a 4 round technical decision on Saturday night at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California after falling out of the ring in the 4th round and landing on a ringside table. Cintron, 30, had the air knocked out of him after hitting the table. Cintron wasn’t hit with a punch, but rather he tripped over the leg of Williams and then fell out of the ring. Williams had fallen on the canvas himself.

It’s unknown why the referee didn’t score the fight a no contest, as it seemed like a pretty clear case of the fight ending from a fall rather than a punch causing the damage. The final judges’ scores were 39-37, 36-40, 40-36. Some boxing fans felt that Cintron had controlled the action up to the point where he fell out of the ring. Cintron was taken out of the ring on a stretcher with a neck brace on him.

In an article by Greg Leon of Boxing Talk, Cintron’s attorney Josh Dubin pointed out that Cintron had the “wind knocked out of him” during the fall. “He wanted to continue and wouldn have bene able to do so within the five minute time frame that he should have been afforded to recover, Dubin said. Dubin has a point. Since Cintron fell out of the ring after tripping over one of Williams’ legs, he should have been given time to recover and then continue fighting instead of the bout going to the cards. Dubin says “The judge who scored every round for Williams should never be allowed to judge another fight. If Williams can walk way feeling like the inner, he’s not the fighter we thought he was. Kermit wants a rematch and could be ready for it very quickly.” The only question now is whether boxing fans would want to see Williams and Cintron fight one more time. They might not want to see them go at it again.
