By Eric Thomas: Victor Ortiz (27-2-1, 21 KOs) defeated Nate Campbell (33-6-1, 25 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, in New York. The fight was far from exciting, as Ortiz dominated Campbell, making him look his age. The entire fight card was pretty dull, filled with mismatches like this fight. This bout may have looked good on paper, but in reality it wasn’t even close. Ortiz had too much speed and power for the smaller, older Campbell to deal with.

Ortiz used his superior hand speed and ring movement to box circles around Campbell. Ortiz scored a knockdown in the 1st round, but was unable to repeat the feat in the other rounds. Campbell stalked Campbell continuously but was too slow to connect with many of his power shots. Campbell didn’t look like he was willing to take chances to beat Ortiz like Marcos Maidana had done a year ago when he took out Ortiz in a 6th round stoppage. Campbell may have wished he had gone after Ortiz hard, because he would have taken less punishment that way.

Undefeated middleweight Daniel Jacobs (20-0, 17 KO’s) put a body punching clinic in stopping Juan Astorga (14-5-1, 9 KO’s) in the 2nd round after dropping him four times in the fight, most of them from big punches to the body. Astorgam 31, was knocked down three times in the 1st round and a final time in the 2nd. Jacobs knocked Astorga down twice in the 1st with shots. The other knockdown was from a vicious head shot from Jacobs. In the 2nd round, Jacobs knocked Astorga down with a tremendous left hand to the midsection. He didn’t get up from that knockdown and was counted out by referee Steve Willis at 0:51.

Colombian knockout artist Breidis Prescott (22-2, 19 KO’s) had too much power for Jason Davis (11-7-1, 3 KO’s), stopping him in the 3rd round/ The bout was held at welterweight, rather than the normal light welterweight for Prescott. In the 3rd, Prescott connected with some hard body shots, knocking Davis down twice in the round. The fight was stopped at 1:11 of the 3rd, immediately after the 2nd knockdown. Prescott is hoping to get a shot at Amir Khan, who he stopped in the 1st round in 2008. Perhaps he will some day, but Khan so far has resisted trying to avenge his loss.

other bouts on the card:

Kelvin Price SD 6 Tor Hamer
Denis Douglin TKO 2 Joshua Onyango
Jamie Kavanagh TKO 2 William Ware
