Image: Berto-Quintana Set for April 10By Alexander Fugate: It has been reported that Andre Berto will defend his World Boxing Council welterweight title against the talented Carlos Quintana on April 10. Quintana is an excellent boxer and poses a real test for the young Berto. Since winning the WBC belt, Berto has defended it against Steve Forbes, Luis Collazo, and Juan Urango.

Both Forbes and Urango are smaller spending most of their career fighting below the welterweight division. Still, Forbes, Collazo, and Urango are all quality fighters, just one or two notches below the top echelon of fighters.

Quintana is 27-2 with 21 knockouts. He is the only man to beat Paul Williams; his only two losses are the rematch with Williams and to Miguel Cotto. This could well be Berto’s toughest fight yet, and by no means a sure victory. The winner of this bout should be a real consideration for the Mayweather-Mosley winner should Manny Pacquiao not fight whoever wins May 1. With Cotto’s performance’s since Margarito and with Williams fighting above 147 for a while, it would be hard to argue the winner isn’t the third or fourth best at welterweight at worst, behind only Mayweather, Mosley, and Pacquiao.

On the same card of Berto-Quintana will reportedly be IBF light heavyweight champion Tarvoris Cloud defending his belt against Glen Johnson. A win for Cloud would really prove he’s a legitimate champion. It would most likely lead to fans demanding a Chad Dawson-Tarvoris Cloud match in the near future should Dawson get by his rumored next opponent Jean Pascal later this summer.

Both Berto and Cloud could be big names in boxing in the not too distant future. Both fights will be big tests, for young fighters many think will help carry boxing in the coming years. The Berto-Quintana match could prove huge for the victor’s career, with three big name superstar’s in the same division. Glen Johnson already has two losses to Dawson, but a win for the 28 year-old Cloud could set up big fights and paydays. This should really be a great card showcasing two young champions hoping for bright futures as the pugilists they are.
