By Jorge Lugo: Haha, I told you boxing world! I told you, I told you, I told you! The fact is, neither Manny Pacquiao nor Floyd Mayweather Jr can say there the best till they beat Shane Mosley. Now low and behold, it’s pretty much set in stone. Floyd Mayweather Jr. will fight Shane Mosley on May 1st in Las Vegas. Sad part here is, the general consensus of people are more in awe of Mayweather agreeing to fight a valuable opponent than the fact that this is for Mosley’s newly crowned World Boxing Association belt.
But regardless, man what a matchup! Mosley who is an inch taller than Mayweather has had high profile fights for a long time now. Mayweather Jr. on the other hand, may not of had as many high profile fights but has surely had higher grossing bouts. The fact here though is this is a fight that either man can pull off. Mosley possesses the power and Mayweather possesses the speed.
Also, what makes this fight such a huge event is what the fighters have outside the ring as well. It’s no secret that Mayweather isn’t the most humblist guy in the world. In every Mayweather fight for the last century it wasn’t hard to catch “Money” proclaim he is the “cash-cow”, and “best p4p”. But of course my favorite Mayweather quote, “40 had a game plan and 40 of them have failed”! Ironically however, Mosley, is the exact opposite, “I do my talking in the ring” fits his chracter perfectly because well, he does. Put “Sugar” Shane in a ring with ANY top welterweight of today and I promise his opposition won’t take him lightly.
Max Kellerman said while anouncing on the Mayweather vs Marquez bout that “any permunantation of Pacquiao, Mayweather, Mosley is a superfight” to his credit I have to agree. But for those who say that this fight would not be more entertaining or not more of a test than Pacquiao vs Mayweather are wrong. Fact is, Mosley vs. Mayweather has the potential to blow away Pacquiao-Mayweather as far as a fight value. Sure Pacquiao-Mayweather would def make more money but in terms of the actual fight this is as big as it gets.
My wish is that as and when May 1st comes around the whole boxing world will not wait for tomorrow and truely appreciate what they have in front of them. No wishing or praying for a Pacquiao bout because we all know it will eventually get here. Fact is, we are at a true renaissance era and it should be valued. Fights like these are too far in-between. Appreciate the sport in it’s purest form: the skill and will of each man. On May 1st please boxing fans, just appreciate boxing.
Mayweather will be 33yrs old and Shane Mosley will be 38 when they step in the ring. Does that really make a difference? Truth is, for any other fighter it would, but not for Shane Mosley. You better believe he will be in top form, as well as Mayweather. In this fight, look for Shane to pursue the action and look for Floyd to go into ultimate defensive mode! But for the record… If I had to make a bet on it, I would say the win goes to Mosley by late stoppage! Make no mistake, these fighters are two of the best. However, I feel Mosley is more hungry and therefore will be too much of “Sugar” for Mayweather’s sweet tooth. Then again, I am sure there are those who disagree but hey isn’t that what makes boxing such a huge sport? Ahh for the love of the game.
