Toney talks Tarver, Arreola, Hopkins and Kevin Johnson

By Eric Thomas: In an interview with Boxing Talk, 41-year-old James Toney (72-6-3, 44 KO’s) mentioned that he’s interested in fighting Antonio Taver after finding out that Tarver himself is interested in fighting him. When told that Tarver wanted to fight him, Toney said in an interview with Greg Leon, “Really? We can do this.” Toney then off the beaten track and started talking about the Klitschko brothers, David Haye, and Chris Arreola.

Toney isn’t happy that these heavyweights haven’t shown any interest in fighting him. Toney then went on to say this about Arreola: “He’s a sorry a– bum. He cried like a b–ch when he got beat by the Klitschko brothers in September.”

Toney has been fighting well as of late, winning three out of his last four fights. He beat Fres Oquendo by a close 12 round decision in December 2008, and then defeated Matthew Greer in an impressive 2nd round TKO in September.

Toney is keeping his options open for his next opponent. He said this out Bernard Hopkins: “I want fake a– Bernard Hopkins…The last guy he fought [Enrique Ornelas] had no business going the distance with him.”

Speaking about the heavyweight division, Toney said this “Everybody in the heavyweight division is a bum. Look at Queenpin [Kevin Johnson]. He ain’t do sh– like he said he was going to do. Queenpin stunk up the joint.” Toney, of course, is referring to Johnson’s poor performance against World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, who easily defeated Johnson by a lopsided 12 round decision last Saturday night in Berne, Switzerland. Johnson spent virtually the entire fight resting with his back against the ropes, rarely throwing anything back at Klitschko other than jabs and sneaky right hands. It was not Johnson at his best.

Toney is also interested in fighting Arreola, whom he calls a “C + fighter.” Toney believes that he’d easily beat Arreola if given the chance to fight him.

Realistically, it’s doubtful that Arreola, Haye, or Hopkins will be looking to fight Toney anytime soon. But Tarver remains a possibility for him. Both him and Tarver are over 40, and Tarver, 41, hasn’t fought in seven months since losing back to back fights with Chad Dawson. Tarver isn’t getting and needs to get back in the ring soon or else he may end up losing some of his skills through inactivity.
