Meyerdiercks defeats Nagy on questionable decision; Lo Greco defeats Starikov

By Boxing News - 10/14/2009 - Comments

Unbeaten featherweight prospect Marcel Meyerdiercks (14-0, 5 KO’s) defeated journeyman Zsolt Nagy (13-11, 5 KO’s) by an eight round majority decision, in a fight in which the 22-year-old Meyerdiercks did little other than run from the 3rd round on on Saturday night at the Stadthalle, Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.

The scoring of the fight was atrocious in my view, because Meyerdiercks threw few punches and did nothing but circle around the ring, changing directions constantly without throwing many punches from the 3rd round until the 8th. The final judges’ scores were 77-75, 77-77 and 77-75. I had Nagy winning the fight six rounds to two.

Meyerdiercks fought well in the first two rounds, throwing jabs and moving well. Nagy did little during this time and just seemed to follow Meyerdiercks around the ring looking to land punches. However, after the 2nd round, Meyerdiercks stopped punching for the most part and just moved around the ring trying to avoid Nagy.

For the next five rounds, Nagy chased Meyerdiercks around the ring, pummeling him with punches every time he would catch up to him. In six through eight, Meyerdiercks looked terrified of mixing it and just seemed to be running out the clock. The German crowd even looked bored.

Phil Lo Greco defeats Starikov

Unbeaten welterweight prospect Phil Lo Greco (19-0, 10 KO’s) defeated Estonian journeyman Albert Starikov (13-11-1, 4 KO’s) by an eight round unanimous decision. Greco, 25, showed little power and didn’t exactly impress due to his constant movement. The high point of the fight came in the 3rd round when Greco dropped Starikov with a right hook to the head. The punch was a flash knock down, however. Greco rarely sat down on his punches during the fight.

The 36-year-old Starikov threw few punches in the early rounds of the fight. He upped his paced in the 6th round and had Greco looking worried and tired. Rather than stand and trade with Starikov, Greco spent the last two rounds moving a great deal and making the fight difficult to watch.

The final judge’s scores were 80-70, 77-74 and 79-71. Greco is going to need to find some power somewhere because he’s much too weak of a puncher to go far in the welterweight division. He might want to consider moving down in weight, although even at light welterweight, I think he’d have problems because of his nonexistent power. Greco needs to go on a weight regimen to try and increase his power somehow. At welterweight, he’ll be taken apart if he ever fights a halfway decent fighter with power.

Jonak defeats Marianini

Undefeated light middleweight prospect Damian Jonak (23-0, 17 KO’s) defeated 40-year-old Sylvestre Marianini (8-19-3, 2 KO’s) by a six round unanimous decision. The final judges’ scores were 60-54, 60-54 and 60-54. Jonak, 24, dominated Marianini throughout the six round bout, hitting him with jabs and fast combinations.

The fight was never competitive from the start as Jonak had far too much talent for his limited opponent. Marianini put up a reasonable fight in the first three rounds, but after the 3rd, it was all one way traffic as Jonak landed at will to the head and body of Marianini without having to worry about any return fire from him. Marianini suffered a cut left eye in the 6th round, but this round like the others was totally one-sided with Jonak landing all the punches and Marianini just absorbing punishment.
