Roy Jones Jr. vs. Danny Green in December?

By Scott Gilfoid: According to a number of news sources, Roy Jones Jr. (54-5, 40 KO’s) could possibly be fighting former World Boxing Association (WBA) light heavyweight champion Danny Green (27-3, 24 KO’s) on December 2nd, and not November 21st, which was the originally scheduled date for their 12 round bout in Sydney, Australia.

In the end, it hardly matters whether the fight takes place on November 21st or 11 days later on December 2nd. The main thing is that the two will be fighting, and I got to tell you I’m not all that interested in seeing the 40-year-old Jones fight another old dude like himself in the 36-year-old Green.

It might not have been a bad fight had it taken place five to seven years ago, but I’m hardly interested in seeing Jones fight a guy that’s two fights into a comeback from a two year retirement. I think Jones made a mistake in choosing Green, because this is a fight that will mainly interest Australian fans only.

If that was Jones’ intention, then so be it. But I’m guessing he’ll be making this a pay-per-view bout for the U.S. audiences, if they’re interested in forking over cash to see this fight.

I thought Green was an alright fighter before he retired, but I never saw him as a champion level fighter, even thought he briefly held the WBA light heavyweight title in 2007 after beating Stipe Drews by a 12 round decision. I actually had Drews, the champion, winning that fight by two rounds.

However, it’s tough when you have to travel to another fighter’s country and fight, and in this case, the bout was held in Green’s native Australia. Like I said, I saw Drews easily winning that fight by at least two rounds, possibly four.

Instead of fighting Green, I think Jones would do much better if he would choose someone like newly crowned IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud, or WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal. Heck, I’d even prefer Jones to fight WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo or WBO light heavyweight champion Zsolt Erdei. At least in their cases, they have actual titles. I’d even prefer that Jones fight light heavyweight contender Beibut Shumenov.

I realize that Shumenov recently lost a questionable 12 round decision to Campillo, but the guy is young, relevant in the light heavyweight division, and will be sticking around for long time to come. I think that would be an excellent choice for Jones to take.

Shumenov has a style a lot like Jones and it would be interesting to see how Jones would do against a fighter like him. Then there’s Chad Dawson and Glen Johnson. Who wouldn’t want to see Jones fight either of those two fighters? Jones needs to avenge his 9th round knockout loss to Johnson, and this would be the perfect time to do it.

As for Dawson, yeah, I Know, Jones would probably get riddled to pieces and totally humiliated by Dawson, but just think of the interest there would between Dawson and Jones. I certainly think it would be much more than a fight against an old, 36-year-old Green.

That is another bad choice for Jones. I thought Jones’s last choice, a washed up Jeff Lacy was bad, but a fight against Green is even worse. That’s not because Green might not be able to win, but rather because he’s basically invisible in the U.S. in terms of name value, and plus he doesn’t have a title.
