Why isn’t More Boxing Aired on British TV?

froch637By Steven Wain: The following article is not a usual boxing article; this is my rant about boxing not being given enough coverage in Britain. In Britain very few boxing fights are actually aired on live TV compared to varies other countries.

In Britain if you don’t have sky sports or don’t pay for the odd sky box office fights, then your pretty much doomed to watching Mick Hennessy fights that are on ITV4 but even these are every once in a while.

It makes me laugh that so called sports like “snooker” and “bowels” are getting more TV coverage then boxing, now I’m no expert but I thought a sport that has a large fan base, known worldwide and actually has British boxers competing at the top end of the sport would be enough for TV companies to battle to get the rights to air boxing, or at least cover more fights, however this is not the case for some bizarre reason British boxing fans are left with hardly any boxing coverage at all.

TV companies couldn’t even be bothered to buy the rights for what was the Froch vs Taylor fight, I mean that just takes the biscuit, at the time Froch was Britain’s ONLY world champion and fighting someone like Jermain Taylor, surly British TV companies would have been fighting for the rights to the fight, wrong, instead they would rather play soccer replays that everyone has watch a billion times and, British boxing fans had to result to the internet to watch one of there own in a world championship fight.

It’s a pain when I only get to watch 6 fights a month even though there are hundreds of fights that could be aired. Its about time more boxing is aired on British TV there are many channels out there and its about time boxing is recognized by the British TV companies as a top sport.
