By Dave Lahr: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. made a reversal of his pick in the November 14th bout between Manny Pacquiao and welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, choosing Pacquiao to win the fight by a knockout, according to the latest boxing news. Mayweather Sr. points out that Cotto took a tremendous amount of punishment in his fights against Joshua Clottey and especially against Antonio Margarito.

Mayweather Sr. thinks that Pacquiao, 30, will hone in on the recently healed cut over Cotto’s left eye, which was opened in Cotto’s last fight against Clottey in their fight in June. In an article at Doghouse Boxing, Mayweather Sr. ranked Floyd Mayweather Jr., (his son) and Juan Manuel Marquez as being the top fighters in the world in the pound-for-pound listing and put Pacquiao in the “middle of the list.”

pac34526Although Mayweather Sr. sees Pacquiao beating Cotto on November 14th, Mayweather Sr., wasn’t too impressed with Pacquiao’s skills, saying “He can’t fight someone with boxing skills. Morales showed you how to beat him in their first fight.” Mayweather also pointed out that Juan Manuel Marquez displayed how to beat Pacquiao in his two fights against the Filipino fighter.

Mayweather Sr. was on the losing end as a trainer recently when Ricky Hatton, who was being trained by Mayweather Sr., was destroyed in the 2nd round on May 2nd by Pacquiao. Mayweather Sr. says that Hatton didn’t follow his instructions by going directly out and not protecting himself while trying to slug it out with the faster Pacquiao.

Mayweather Sr. wanted Hatton to use his jab and a lot movement against Pacquiao, but instead the British fighter ignored Mayweather Sr’s instructions and stood directly in front of Pacquiao with his guard down and got beaten up. Hatton, 30, ended up getting knocked down twice in the first round. After the round ended, Hatton was seen taking instructions from his assistant trainer rather than exclusively from Mayweather Sr.

In the 2nd round, Hatton went barreling out with the same brawling style he tried in the first, trying to land big hooks and getting nailed by the quicker Pacquiao. The fight was over in shortly after as Pacquiao nailed the wide open Hatton with a huge left hand which knocked Hatton out cold.

In the aftermath of the fight, some boxing fans blamed Mayweather Sr. for Hatton’s loss. However, it was hard to find blame for Mayweather Sr. because Hatton never appeared to use any of the defensive techniques that Mayweather Sr. had been trying to teach him all throughout their training camp.
