By Dave Lahr: Undefeated lightweight knockout artist Breidis Prescott (21-0, 18 KO’s) will be putting his unbeaten record on the line tonight against Mexican Miguel Vazquez (24-3, 12 KO’s) in a 10-round bout at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Prescott, ranked number #4 in the World Boxing Organization, #5 in the WBO, and #7 in the WBC, is looking to move up in the rankings with a win over Vazquez.

Thus far, Prescott hasn’t had any luck in getting any of the lightweight champions to fight him, perhaps because of his huge power and his 5’11’ height. There was talk of Prescott fighting Edwin Valero, the WBC lightweight champion, but Valero wanted no part of Prescott and instead is looking at fighting 38-year-old Joel Casamayor or Juan Manuel Marquez.

Right now, Prescott may be a little too dangerous for his own good. The way that he stopped Amir Khan in one brutal round last year in September seems to have scared away all Prescott’s potential opponents. Khan isn’t interested in even trying to avenge the defeat and is looking for much softer opponents to fight rather than risking fate by trying to get revenge.

Although wiry and rail thin, Prescott is perhaps the biggest puncher in the lightweight division at this time. Some say that Valero is, but I disagree with that. Prescott appears to much a lot harder and is capable of throwing very hard punches effortlessly with every punch unlike Valero, who has to load up with his shots to get a lot of power on them.

Besides his big power, Prescott’s long arms and excellent left hook makes him much more dangerous than he already with his big power. He’s able to get a lot of leverage into his hooks that he throws to the body and head and because of the way that his punches loop in, it’s hard for his opponents to see the shots coming until it’s too late.

Prescott needs to keep winning so that he can move up in the rankings. It’s doubtful that Marquez, Valero or Paulus Moses will fight Prescott unless he’s their mandatory challenger and they’re put in a position of being stripped of their titles unless they fight him.

In Khan’s case, I have serious doubts that he will ever fight Prescott again. :Prescott proved that he was Khan’s master in that fight when he staggered Amir with a jab in the opening seconds of the fight. Freddie Roach, Khan’s trainer, has been on the campaign trail recently giving interviews for the Khan-Kotelnik fight in which Roach has been explaining way the loss to Prescott as a situation where Khan made the mistake of coming out too aggressive and trying to slug it out with Prescott. Even Khan has been repeating the same things about the loss.

However, Prescott hurt Khan with a hard jab and not a power punch in the opening seconds and had him ready to go from that punch. Khan being aggressive had nothing to do with his loss to Prescott. The loss was a result of Prescott’s powerful jab, which is one of the best in the lightweight division, and Khan’s weak chin.

Look for Prescott to give Vazquez a one-sided beating tonight. It’s hard to say whether Prescott will knock Vazquez out, because the Mexican fighter appears to have an excellent chin. Vazquez has gone the full route against Saul Alvarez and Timothy Bradley in the past, losing to both of them by decision.

Neither Bradley or Alvarez punch nearly as hard as Prescott, though, so there’s a good chance that Prescott might be able to get him out of there. Minus that happening, look for Prescott to win by a lopsided 10-round decision.
