hatton4534570By William Mackay: Amir Khan (20-1, 15 KOs) thinks that Ricky Hatton can come back and capture another title, according to Frankwarren.tv. Khan thinks that Hatton should wait awhile before making a decision about what he’s going to do with his future in the sport. There are currently a lot of boxing fans, writers and ex-fighters that have called for Hatton to retire.

Khan apparently is one of the few that thinks that Hatton can not only continue fighting but can also come back and win a title. Hatton is coming off the worst defeat of his career, a humiliating 2nd round knockout by Manny Pacquiao and there are serious questions about whether Hatton can still take a big shot in a fight.

If Hatton were to come back and win a title, he has a lot of opportunities in the light welterweight division against champions Kendall Holt, Juan Urango and the winner of the Andriy Kotelnik vs. Khan bout that takes place on June 27th.

Besides that, there’s the WBC where Devon Alexander and Junior Witter are about to fight for the vacant title. Urango, the IBF champion, is an easy mark for Hatton, since he’s already beaten Urango by a 12-round decision in 2007 and won the fight quite easily in a one-sided bout.

None of those fights would bring in the kind of money that a fight with Khan would for Hatton. But Hatton is a friend of Khan, which probably will rule out a fight with Amir from ever happening regardless of Khan’s interest. It would be a great fight, but Hatton against anyone at this point would be a fantastic fight.

Hatton will get a great deal of praise, money and attention if he can come back and just win period against quality fighters. Should Hatton be able to defeat one of the champions in the light welterweight division, Hatton would be back in business and would have boxing eating out of his hands.

The losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao may not be forgotten, but it would less important due to Hatton’s comeback win. Even better for Hatton would be him showing a change in his brawling style of fighting, even if it’s just a small change.

It would be seen as a sign of progress by Hatton’s fans and would give them a sliver a hope that Hatton can be a factor in the future. The shots that Hatton was hurt by in his two losses to Mayweather and Pacquiao were by punches that he never saw coming. Hatton was too eager in both fights and walked into big shots and was dropped.
