Is Mosley Too Dangerous for Pacquiao?

By Manuel Perez: Ever since Shane Mosley advised Manny Pacquiao that he would agree to meet him at whatever catch weight that he wants to fight him, the interest from the Pacquiao side for a Pacquiao-Mosley fight has died away completely.

The word is that Pacquiao is looking to wait on the outcome of the Miguel Cotto vs. Joshua Clottey fight that takes place on June 13th. If that’s the case, then it looks as if Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter, prefers that Pacquiao fight Cotto rather than the dangerous Mosley.

I guess can’t blame Arum for wanting to look for an easier fight for Pacquiao, because Manny might be in trouble against the fast and talented Mosley. I just don’t get the pound for pound thing. If a fighter is considered to be the top fighter in boxing, they should at least take on the dangerous opponents rather than skip around and look for beatable fighters like Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya and Cotto.

Sure, Cotto is a great fighter but there’s a lot of questions out there about him since he was beaten up badly by Antonio Margarito last year. And Cotto is likely to take a great deal of punishment in his June 13th bout with Clottey. I think Cotto will win but he will absorb a lot of punishment in the fight.

Pacquiao getting him after such a fight would be like taking on a fighter that had just been involved in a war and not quite the same person. Cotto will probably need a lot of time to recover from his battle with Clottey, a lot more than four months and Pacquiao will probably end up facing a shell shocked fighter next.

If Pacquiao wants to take on a fighter that has no questions about what he has left, he needs to go after to Mosley and prove that he can beat the former pound for pound star. I don’t think he can and neither does experts like De La Hoya.

Mosley has been going after Pacquiao hard for the past couple of weeks, and apparently got a verbal agreement from Pacquiao to fight him. However, Pacquiao seemed to have a change of heart and said that he wasn’t going to fight Mosley and was waiting until the Clottey-Cotto fight took place.

I don’t blame Pacquiao for wanting to get the biggest payday he can, but he’s wasting his time waiting on that fight when he has Mosley, who is probably much more popular than Cotto and is fighting at the top of his game right now. How can Pacquiao not want to take the fight. Is it that Mosley is too good for him?

I think Mosley would have destroyed Hatton and De La Hoya much easier than Pacquiao did. If Pacquiao is looking for an appealing opponent, there’s none better than Mosley right now. What other choices are there? Edwin Valero would be a horrible opponent because he little experience against top level fighters and has only been seen once by American audiences.

Pacquiao would probably knock him out in the first minute of the first round, as soon as he lands something big. Juan Manuel Marquez would be a great opponent but he’s currently tied down with a fight next month against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

If he weren’t busy, then by all means Marquez would be the best opponent there. He’s already done a number on Pacquiao twice before and a third time would be much easier. I doubt that Pacquiao would fight him though because of the first two fights.
