cintron334By Manuel Perez: Kermit Cintron (31-2-1, 27 KO’s) pulled off a tremendous upset against previously unbeaten number #1 ranked light middleweight Alfredo Angulo in a 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Hollywood, Florida. Despite winning the fight and landing the weaker punches for 12 rounds, Cintron only landed fifty more punches than Angulo.

I thought the decision was ridiculous and had Angulo winning the fight by eight rounds to four. Cintron may have landed a few more punches than Angulo, but they were the weaker variety in the way of mostly jabs compared to Angulo’s much harder body and head shots.

After the bout, Angulo rushed out of the ring without being interviewed by anyone. I can’t blame him for leaving quickly, because he should be pissed for not getting the decision. He should have. I think Cintron did a much better job than I expected him to, because I figured he would knocked out by Angulo given Cintron’s two losses to the Angulo clone Antonio Margarito.

However, Cintron fought entirely different against Angulo than he did in his two fights with Margarito. Instead of trying to mix it up with Angulo, Cintron jabbed frequently, and used a lot of movement. It saved him from getting mowed down by Angulo but it wasn’t enough for Cintron to win the fight.

Believe me, Cintron lost the fight on Saturday night. When two fighters throw about the same amount of punches, you have to reward the fighter that’s landing the harder shots in the fight. In this case, it was Angulo in all 12 rounds. Cintron landed some hard shots at times, but he fought too often on the move and this took a lot of power out of his shots.

Cintron jabbed and moved in the opening round, not staying in front of Angulo for a second. Cintron was doing well until the last minute of the round when Angulo began pressuring him, and hitting him with big right hands one after another until the end of the round.

The second round was a repeat of the first. Cintron fought well in the first two minutes of the round throwing jabs mostly, but in the last minute Cintron stopped punching and began to get really hammered by Angulo with combinations. In the 3rd and 4th rounds, Cintron came back to win the rounds by landing hard right hands to the head.

Angulo appeared to be hurt by a couple of right hands in the 4th. He recovered immediately and fought well for the rest of the round, however. In the 5th round, Cintron landed well in the first half of the rounds, but in the 2nd part of the round Angulo began to land some really heave shots and had Cintron literally running for his life.

Cintron jabbed and moved well in the 6th, hitting Angulo often and avoiding his big shots. In rounds seven through nine, Angulo dominated the action with his heavy pressure and big power shots. Cintron looked tired, worried and was unable to get away from Angulo no matter how much running he did.

Cintron came back in the 10th to win the round with his jabbing. He moved just enough to prevent Angulo from cutting off the ring and trapping him. However, in the last two rounds, Angulo stalked Cintron all around the ring, blasting away at him with huge power shots.

There was no way that you Cintron could have won either of these rounds because he was really getting hammered and mostly just jabbing in response to big shots he was forced to eat.

After the fight, Cintron said “I feel great at both weights [welterweight and light middleweight]. I still feel I can become world champion at 147, but I definitely feel at 154 I can be a world champion too.”
