john53558By Eric Thomas: World Boxing Association featherweight champion Chris Chris John (42-0-2, 22 KOs) will be fighting a rematch with American challenger Rocky Juarez (28-4-1, 20 KOs) on June 27th at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. This is excellent news because the previous fight between John, 29, and Juarez ended up in a controversial 12-round draw in February at the Toyota Center, in Houston, Texas.

John appeared to easily win the fight by a huge margin, winning a minimum of 10 of the 12 rounds of the fight, but ending up with a draw with the hometown fighter Juarez. This time, the WBA champion John will once again be fighting out of his native country of Indonesia but at least the fight won’t be in Juarez’s home town of Houston, Texas.

Juarez did little in the fight until the last couple of rounds of the bout, throwing almost no punches until the end. By then, Juarez needed a knockout according to my scores to win the fight. Although Juarez came on strong in the last two rounds to win them, those were the only rounds that I could in my mind seeing him winning in the entire fight.

Alfonso Gomez Returns to Action Against Juan Manuel Buendia on May 1st

After a year off from boxing, welterweight contender Alfronso Gomez (18-4-2, 8 KOs) will get back in the ring against Juan Manuel Buendia (14-2-1, 8 KOs) in a 10-round bout on May 1st at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Gomez was trounced by Miguel Cotto in a 5th round stoppage in April 2008, being beaten in every round. Before that, Gomez had beaten Martin Concepcion, Arturo Gatti and Ben Tackie in consecutive fights. The win over Gatti, a 7th round stoppage, was especially impressive with Gomez dominating the former WBC light welterweight champion with ease and battering him in every round.

Buendia hasn’t fought since November 2007, losing a 10-round decision to welterweight contender Jesus Soto Karass.
