Latest Boxing News – Oquendo Wants Rematch With Toney; Brinkley Scores KO

By Boxing News - 12/22/2008 - Comments

POW Sports Entertainment who represents Fres Oquendo and the Oquendo camp request their Promoters Arena Boxing USA, specifically Mr. Ahmet Oner and Luis DeCubas that they vehemently request and seek, from Versus (VS), and Goossen Tooter an immediate rematch against James Toney. Fres Oquendo will fight James “Fatburger” Toney in any venue other than the corrupt state of California, winner take all.

If Fres does not knockout Toney, Oquendo will declare him the winner personally. We know that our promoter, Arena Boxing USA and Mr. Ahmet Oner can make this possible and we are begging him to make it happen.

The Oquendo camp plans to launch and intensive attack on the decision made by the judges and the California State Athletic Commission in a formal complaint, which it will file sometime in the next week. We feel not only the decision by 2 of the judges was flat out wrong, the point taken away by referee Lou Moret was wrong. After review of the tape it is apparent that a foul was not committed and with that point taken away it cost Mr. Oquendo a draw.

We are also presently speaking to our attorney and seeking out law firms for any civil lawsuit and class action suit against any promoters, venues, television networks and Athletic commissions which may have contributed to any damages Mr. Oquendo has suffered due to the inexcusable acts committed by the parties aforementioned. We will seek to remedy the harm done to Mr Oquendo by the actions of these parties. We also attempt to file civil suits, personally, against David Mendoza, Marty Denkin and Lou Moret for personal harm done to Mr. Oquendo by their decisions, which have caused harm to Mr. Oquendo. Just to make it clear, our ultimate intentions are to get the decision overturned into either a draw or a no contest, get Fres a rematch and more importantly make this a harbinger to the CSAC not to make horrible decisions in the future.

Christmas Cracker for Dunne

Bernard Dunne will hit Irish TV screens again over Christmas when RTÉ TWO broadcast “Big Time” at 9:30pm on Tuesday, December 30th.

The documentary goes behind the scenes and features Dunne and his promoter Brian Peters as they travel the road to European title glory. The documentary covers Dunne’s return home to Ireland following a three year apprenticeship in the U.S. under boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard and renowned trainer Freddie Roach.

The Dubliner quickly became a household name in Ireland reeling off a string of impressive victories before challenging for the European title at a sold out Point Theatre in his native city. An emotion charged night saw Dunne become champion of Europe with a career best performance and two successful defences followed.

However Dunne’s world fell apart at the hands of Kiko “La Sensación” Martinez with the Spanish wrecking ball ripping Dunne’s title away in just 86 seconds.

Since then Dunne has picked up the pieces and rebuilt his career with three straight wins as he build toward the ultimate prize – a world title fight in 2009.

“Big Time” tells that story with incredible highs, wounding lows and fearless ambition, all set against the tough and at times cruel backdrop of professional boxing.

Big Time: Bernard Dunne’s Fight for Glory is produced for RTÉ by Liberty Films with funding support from Sound & Vision, a Broadcasting Commission of Ireland initiative.

BASTIE SAMIR SCORES FIRST ROUND KO IN WASHINGTON D.C.

“THE BEAST”, Bastie Samir continued his wreckage through the East Coast on Saturday night with a crunching first round knockout of William “BAM BAM” Armstead at the Burr Arena in Washington, D.C.

Along with his punishing jab, Samir was relentless with his body shots, dropping Armstead twice in the first round. A final left hook to the chin called a halt to the carnage at the 1:20 mark of the opening stanza of the scheduled four round middleweight bout.

“Best he’s looked so far, the bazooka jab was on target from the outset and Bastie’s body shots were just paralyzing to Amstead”, said Samir’s promoter, Chet Koerner of TKO BOXING Promotions.

With the win, Samir, the captain of the 2008 Ghanaian Olympic Team moved to 3-0, all by first round knockout.

Said trainer John Rajala, “The critical thing for Bastie is he’s relaxing in the ring. For a young fighter, it’s important to stay focused and not get too anxious. He’s done a very solid job of utilizing what we worked on in the gym.

We’re going to give him a little time off for the holidays and then bring him back in late January, ideally we’d like him to fight once a month in 2009.”

The 22 year old Samir, currently living and training in Las Vegas, is managed by Cameron Dunkin.

Formed in early 2008, Chet Koerner’s Las Vegas based TKO Boxing Promotions stable includes; super middleweight Joey Gilbert, middleweights Bastie “THE BEAST” Samir and James Countryman, junior middleweight Anthony Thompson, lightweights Rolando Reyes, Raul Tovar and Terrence Crawford, the sister team of Katy and Emily Klinefelter, featherweight Carney Bowman, and super bantamweight Rafael Valenzuela.
