Talks get started for a Khan-Brook megafight in England

khan6676By Raj Parmar: Kell Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn has come out and stated that he has begun initial talks in setting up a welterweight championship showdown between British fighters Brook (33-0, 22 KO’s) and Amir Khan (29-3, 19 KO’s) in England with next year spring/summer as the target date, via dailymail.co.uk. Hearn hopes to stage the event in Wembley stadium and match the 80,000 fans that packed the stadium to see British super middleweights Carl Froch and George Groves square off earlier this year.

“I am looking at next spring or summer in a fight, maybe at Wembley, that will be just as big as Froch-Groves. I’ve started talks on it,” Hearn stated, “Khan is suddenly very interested in a fight. We are too. People from Showtime, who show Khan’s fights in the US, came into the dressing room after Kell won and said ‘let’s talk’. Other US broadcasters have also been on – it’s exciting times.”

The Welterweight Division

floyd688By C. Noriega: One of the most exciting divisions of our time, it’s without a doubt the welterweight division. For the casual fan, this division is a comfy home-base where mainstream boxing icons share a common floor and glory; for the hardcore fan, on the other hand, this division is a chessboard where fights take place not only on the ring but also on the media. In this article I’ll summarize current title holders and upcoming fights.

1. International Boxing Federation (IBF).
Last weekend we saw an interesting match between Kell “Special K” Brook (33-0, 22 KOs) and an adamant Shawn Porter (24-1-1, 26 Kos) which ended in a decision for the British boxer.

Hearn says Brook vs. Mayweather will sellout Wembley Stadium

floyd11233By Scott Gilfoid: If IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (33-0, 22 KOs) is still a belt holder by late 2015, his promoter Eddie Hearn thinks a fight between him and WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) is a possible fight that can be made between the two fighters.

That, of course, will hinge on Brook defeating his December 6th opponent and then beating former IBF/WBA 140 pound champion Amir Khan in their proposed mega fight at Wembley Stadium in London, UK. If all those cards fall perfectly on the table, we could see a Brook-Mayweather fight. I mean, it’s possible, yeah, but not all that likely.

Hearn talks about Brook’s holding of Porter

brook55666By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn doesn’t think his fighter Kell Brook (33-0, 22 KOs) was holding Shawn Porter (24-1-1, 15 Kos) a lot in their fight last Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Hearn says what Brook was doing was he was tying Porter up rather than holding him, and he sees that as being different from regular holding. They both look the same, but Hearn is giving them different names.

“There’s a difference between holding and tying someone up,” Hearn said to IFL TV. “Andre Ward does it really well. If you watch the Froch-Ward fight, he tied Froch up brilliantly. That’s what Kell did. It was a case where when we get close I’m going to lock you down, and you’re not going to be able to do your work. He [Brook] got told once in the fight to stop holding.”

Brook to fight on December 6th, Hearn says Rios, Berto, Lopez and Guerrero in play

Kell Brook vs Shawn Porter(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Scott Gilfoid: Promoter Eddie Hearn says that his fighter IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (33-0, 22 KOs) will be fighting on December 6th in Sheffield.

Hearn picked the same date that Amir Khan plans on fighting in the United States, because Hearn wants to start building for an April or May mega-fight between Khan and Brook.

As far as who Brook will be fighting next in his voluntary defense on December 6th, Hearn says he’s interested in guys like Brandon Rios, Josesito Lopez, Andre Berto and Robert Guerrero.

Brook-Porter brings in 661K viewers on Showtime

Kell Brook vs Shawn Porter(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Scott Gilfoid: Last Saturday’s Showtime card head-lined by Kell Brook vs. IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter brought in less than spectacular ratings for Showtime, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Porter’s numbers are down from his previous fight against Paulie Malignaggi from last April. We’re talking a big drop off in numbers. The Porter-Malignaggi fight brought in 897,000 viewers on Showtime compared to the 661,000 for the Porter-Brook fight. What was especially sad about the Brook vs. Porter ratings is that the Danny Garcia vs. Rod Salka fight did far better in averaging 808,000 viewers on Showtime. That was a terrible fight too.

Kell Brook – The new Danger man at 147

brook87555By Rav: Last Saturday night, Kell Brook (33-0, 22 KOs) put on a boxing master-class to become the first British fighter to win a world title in America in 28 years by schooling IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter in a 12 round decision victory at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Kell looked well prepared made the weight well and looked in exceptional shape ready for 12 rounds. He handled and nullified Porter’s early onslaught raging in like a bull well and made him miss and countered him well letting Porter burn energy in the early rounds.

Why should Brook fight Thurman?

brook955By Gav Duthie: I’m trying to get my head around the fact that people think Kell Brook 33-0 (22) owes a fight to Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman 23-0 (21). To be honest I think Thurman should be flattered that Brook even mentioned him post fight. I can’t remember any American fighters dropping Kell Brook’s name in any interviews in the last five years.

Parallels with Brook

I see a lot of similarities between Thurman and Brook as completely avoided fighters. Thurman is at the stage of his career where fighting him is not financially lucrative enough for the champions to risk facing a top opponent like him with a high risk of losing. Brook was in the same situation before Saturday night and I would ask Thurman to do the same as Brook and bide is time, His turn will come.
