Froch: Why should I retire?

froch323By Scott Gilfoid: After spending the last few months talking about possibly retiring in the near future, IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) has seemingly reversed course on the issue, and he’s now thinking about continuing his career beyond 2015 if he’s successful in his fights.

Froch could face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in March. What’s really interesting is Froch is even talking about a potential fight against James DeGale, his IBF mandatory challenger.

I mean, that fight is no big deal compared to a match-up against a far more popular guy like Gennady Golovkin, but it is a nice first step for Froch in terms of having him step up the level of his opposition after his last two fights against the inexperienced George Groves.

“Let’s say I get that fight at the beginning of March, which is being talked about, I beat Chavez in style and I feel great doing it, why would I retire?” Froch said via Skysports.com. “I’m not 47, I’m 37. I still feel fresh, I still feel fit. As long as I can still do what I need to do physically then I’ll continue to box,” Froch said.

I can respect that. If I was in a similar situation I’d stick around until the cash stops flowing. I’d never walk away while I had the potential to make millions. Of course, I wouldn’t be thinking about myself. I’d be thinking about my family all the way.

If Froch were to coast at the same level he is at right now, he could potentially fight into his 40s and wind up double or even tripling his fortune with the pay-per-view money he can make. I mean, look at how much money Froch has made just fighting Groves, a fighter who is arguably little more than a step above domestic level.

If Froch can continue to milk fights like that for big money, then why retire? He can always have a trilogy with Groves, and turn around and fight DeGale and Mikkel Kessler for big cash. But if Froch breaks from this simple group of fighters and looks to take a real step up against the Dirrell brothers or Andre Ward, I see him getting beaten soundly. He’d make good money for those fights, don’t get me wrong, but I think he’d lose. But Froch’s loyal fans would likely continue to back him regardless of what happens against Ward and the Dirrell brothers.
