Froch-Golovkin is a possibility for the fall

froch83By Daven: With Carl Froch’s next fight, at last seemingly on the brink of completion, and Gennady Golovkin set to fight four times this year, it made sense to plot a potential bout between these two warriors. Assuming Froch emerges victorious against an over-matched Chavez Jr, and his desire to fight on remains, an encounter with GGG could be enticing. Abel Sanchez enthusiastically stated to the media that his fighter will be staying active yet again. This pleases intelligent boxing fans who’re delighted to see such a crowd-pleaser box regularly.

After viewing Froch’s recent interview with Paul Dempsey, I got the impression he is well aware of Chavez Jr’s flaws. And being the proud man he is, this will affect him. He’ll not want to retire after beating an ill-disciplined fighter such as Julio. Moreover, Carl will be once more persuaded into giving Britain as well as HBO the fight we want. Obviously that is one involving the Kazakh sensation GGG.

Gennady will take care of Martin Murray next month in a semi-competitive affair. One anticipates another knock-out but it’ll be difficult to put in a mesmerizing performance against a spoiler such as Murray, who puts himself into a shell from the get-go. After beating Murray what does Golovkin do? Ideally he’d challenge the winner of Cotto-Canelo but because they’ll be fighting in May, it means GGG would have to wait on the sidelines until the Autumn. This isn’t going to happen as GGG needs to build his name on HBO. So expect to see him fight again in April/May time. I’d like to see him in a unification bout with Andy Lee, at least Andy has KO power unlike Murray and could put up a good fight. Failing that, Alfredo Angulo-Golovkin would make for splendid viewing owing to the aggressiveness of both men.

Needless to say Golovkin will not be fighting elite opposition until September at the earliest. The winner of Canelo-Cotto should fight GGG because by that time his name would’ve been further established. And he’ll be a top 10 P 4 P which is more than either of those guys can hope for. Moreover a GGG-Angulo/Lee/Taylor bout scream Pay Per-View so the red-headed Canelo won’t be able to swerve the fight for ‘financial reasons.’ Neither will the heavily tattooed Cotto who often brags about being a tough negotiator.

Ultimately Canelo will probably defeat Cotto, but I predict his demise against GGG. If Canelo opts for an easier fight against an unheralded opponent, Golovkin will have to target a Eubank Jr calibre fighter or perhaps Andrade. Either way Golovkin will win his next 3 bouts at Middleweight because he’s the boss of the division. Nobody in the 160 lb division has the resilience, punching power or grit to topple him. He’ll realise this by September and promptly move up to Super-middleweight in the quest for new challenges.

Froch said, if he wins convincingly against Chavez Jr, he’d be willing to fight once more in 2015. He stated that it’d be at 168 lb and which encounter would we all buy into the most? Certainly not a third fight with Kessler or Groves and not a second boring bout with Ward. As I’ve been saying, GGG will have to up to 168 in order to get the recognition he deserves. While, it’ll be risky for him to fight Carl in his debut at 168, one expects a competitive fight, neither will get this against the likes of Chavez Jr, Taylor or Cotto. GGG-Froch would easily break UK ppv records and it’s a fight worthy of HBO ppv too. Remember I didn’t say it’s ppv worthy now, rather it will be by November/December of this year, by which time both men will have enjoyed glittering and high-profile victories. And will be seeking to cash in, possibly pocketing £8M-10M each.
