Maidana threatening to walk away from Mayweather fight if he can’t wear his MX gloves

maidana525By Dan Ambrose: Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) is threatening to walk away from his scheduled rematch against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) on September 13th unless he can wear his Everlast MX gloves for the fight.

These are the same type of gloves that Mayweather already rejected for their last fight in May. Mayweather took issue with the gloves after he inspected them and found that they didn’t have as much padding round the knuckle area of the gloves compared to some of the other gloves. Maidana subsequently had to change to a different pair. There was talk that Maidana received money to change to a different pair, but Maidana denied this.

Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe said on Tuesday that the glove issue has been taken care of, but obviously it’s not judging by Maidana’s comments. There was talk of Maidana using Everlast Powerlock gloves, but Maidana is now saying he wants to wear the MX gloves once again.

“I’m training with Powerlock, but now, I want to fight with the gloves that I’m used to wearing, the MX,” Maidana said to Fighthype.com. “That’s what I want to fight in and if not, then we’ll see what happens. If I have to walk away and not fight, I’ll do it.”

If Maidana walks out of the fight over the gloves, it’s going to cause a huge uproar because of the planning and expense that has gone into the fight. Let’s put it this way, I don’t see it as a good career move by Maidana if he walks away from the fight over the gloves.

A lot of money has gone into this fight in terms of promoting it, and all that would be lost. I don’t imagine Mayweather would attempt to fight Maidana at a later date, because there might be some trust issues. If a fighter walks away from a fight once, how can you know if they’re not going to do it again and leave you hanging?
