Khan’s roadmap to Mayweather

khan3By Poerqe: Former two-time world champion Amir Khan (29-3, 19 KOs) has been talking about the Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0, 26 KOs) fight for ages now. Amir Khan seems to think he is simply entitled to a fight with Floyd. I have no idea where this sense of entitlement comes from. To his credit he did look good in his last fight against Luis Collazo (35-6, 18 KOs).

A somewhat dangerous opponent who obliterated Victor ‘toothless’ Ortiz in the fight before. Luis came in to the fight knowing that this was probably going to be one of his (if not only) opportunity to get back in the limelight. But Khan never let Luis in the fight, Luis looked frustrated and never got in to his rhythm.

Khan controlled the majority of the fight and won an easy unanimous decision. It was pretty impressive, considering this was Amir Khan’s first fight after being out of the ring for over a year.

Now Khan is talking about fighting in December against an opponent to be named and then fighting again in May against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0, 26 KOs). He said to Skysports.com:

“The Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight is within touching distance. It’s very close,”. “I don’t want a long wait until May. I want to get a fight in December and look good in that fight. I want to fight nice and comfortable and then go into a super-fight in May. That’s what my idea is and I’ve left it to my team and management to take me to that route.”

Well Khan’s team and management haven’t always given him the best advise regarding that route. It seems like Amir is looking for an easy route to Mayweather. But there is no easy way! For example; Khan pulling out of a potential fight against, then IBF Welterweight holder, Devon Alexander (28-2, 14 KOs). That was seriously a bad move. He thought by just waiting, he would get the Mayweather fight in his lap. That’s just silly. Khan needs to understand that the route to a Mayweather clash is full of dangers, risks and he needs to be man enough to take them.

For Amir’s fight in December, he needs to fight a live opponent. One who is known by the casual fans and respected by the hardcore fight fans. The one that comes to mind is Shawn Porter (24-0, 15 KOs). His victories against Devon Alexander (28-2, 14 KOs)  and Paulie Malignagi  (39-6, 7 KOs)  have people noticing him. Besides he is the ibf welterweight title holder. So Amir could be fighting for a world title. (I am assuming that Shawn Porter wins his next match against Kell Brook.) If Amir wins against Shawn Porter, and looks good doing it. There is nothing stopping him from getting the mega fight with Mayweather.

I for one do think he has the skill sets to give Mayweather a lot of problems. Could he win? Maybe, the fact that Amir is good in winning rounds is an ability that few posses. He could outscore Mayweather. But for this to happen, Amir has to take some risks and step up or forget about Mayweather.
