Collazo wants Mayweather if he gets past Khan on 5/3

floyd62By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBA welterweight champion Luis Collazo (35-5, 18 KO’s) has big ambitions for the future if and when he knocks Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) out in his next fight on May 3rd on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidanas fight card. Collazo wants to face Mayweather in Brooklyn, New York if he can get past Khan.

We already know that Khan is being mentioned as a possible September opponent for Mayweather if he beats Collazo, but we’ve not heard a lot about Collazo getting a fight against Mayweather. It seems to be a one-sided thing with only Khan having a chance of getting the Mayweather fight, and that’s kind of unfortunate because Collazo doesn’t seem to realize that he’s just some guy that Golden Boy Promotions picked out for Khan to beat in order to put Khan in with Mayweather.

If Golden Boy wanted to have Khan really earn the fight against Mayweather, do you really thing Collazo would be the guy that they would have picked? No way. It would be Keith Thurman, because he’s unbeaten, he’s got huge power, and the boxing world is excited about him. But Golden Boy isn’t making Khan fight Thurman to get to Mayweather.

They’ve selected the soon to be 33-year-old Collazo, who has only beaten one decent name in the past 9 years since his win over Miguel Angel Gonzalez in 2005. The other name that Collazo beat was Victor Ortiz, a fighter that is arguably over the hill, if you could ever say he was at the top of the hill.

“If Floyd comes to Brooklyn, Brooklyn will be in the building at Barclays, and we could really give the fans what they want, which is that excitement,” Collazo said to RingTV. “To have him [Mayweather] come to Brooklyn to fight a rugged, Brooklyn fighter who is not stationary, who would give him movement like he gives his opponents, I’m hungry for that.”

It’s not going to happen, Mayweather will not fight Collazo in September this year or in any year, even if he knocks Khan out in the first 15 seconds of the 1st round on May 3rd. Collazo is just too unknown for Mayweather to use up one of his three remaining fights on his Showtime/CBS pay-per-view contract. He’s not going to fight someone that doesn’t have his own huge, huge built in fan base in the United States, because Collazo wouldn’t be able to help pull in fans.

Collazo might have some fans in the New York area, but you’ve got to have more than that to face Mayweather.

I hate to say it but Collazo is just some older fighter that Golden Boy has selected to have a good chance of beating him so that they can get a Khan-Mayweather fight later this year. They matched Collazo against Ortiz to set him up for the Khan fight. They might as well have picked out Josesito Lopez to face Khan, because he also beat Ortiz. Beating Ortiz isn’t a big deal, as we just as saw in his last two fights against Josesito and Collazo.
