Schaefer says Khan-Collazo will be co-feature bout on Mayweather PPV card

collazo66 (2)By Scott Gilfoid: I hope you don’t mind having the Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) vs. Luis Collazo (35-5, 18 KO’s) as the co-feature bout on the May 3rd Showtime pay-per-view card headlined by Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana, because that’s what Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says will be happening. He said today that the Khan-Collazo fight will be the co-feature bout just below the Mayweather-Maidana fight.

“Khan versus Collazo is done, and they’re going to be fighting underneath the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana card,” Schaefer said via RingTV. I think that is a huge addition to the card and it’s a terrific match-up.”

I hate to disagree with Schaefer, but I’m not impressed with the Khan-Collazo fight at all, at least not with it being part of the PPV part of the fight card. Believe me, I think it’s a nice little off TV fight, but I definitely don’t see it as a PPV worthy fight. I this as a Khan vs. Julio Diaz type of match-up, because Collazo has been out of it for too long and I don’t count his recent win over Victor Ortiz as him beating a top fighter.

Sorry, I don’t rate a ring rusty Ortiz as being a top fighter, I just don’t. If Collazo had beaten someone like Keith Thurman, then of course I think he would be a good opponent for a co-feature. But Collazo beating Ortiz isn’t enough in my book for him to be fighting in the co-feature bout against a fighter with a 2-2 record in his last four fights. It was only in 2011 that Collazo was dominated by Freddy Hernandez in losing a lopsided 10 round unanimous decision. For fans who may not have a clue who Freddy Hernandez is, he’s a 35-year-old fighter who has lost 6 out of his last 7 fights since 2010. Guess who he beat during that time to give him that one win? You guessed it, Collazo.

It wouldn’t be so bad to have Collazo in the co-feature if he were fighting a guy who had a winning streak and who was fighting well in his last 4-5 fights, but that’s not the case here. Khan has lost 2 out of his last 4 fights, and he hadn’t beaten a decent fighter since he defeated an over-the-hill Zab Judah with a low blow in 2011. Since then, Khan has lost to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, while beating little Carlos Molina and a past his prime Julio Diaz. By the way, the win over Diaz was a controversial one with many boxing fans seeing Khan losing that fight last year in April. If Khan was fighting at a high level, then a Khan-Collazo fight would be a decent one, but that’s not the case.

The bad thing about Golden Boy Promotions selecting Collazo as Khan’s next opponent is that if Khan loses to this guy or looks as bad as he did in his last fight against Julio Diaz, then you can pretty much forget all about Khan getting that cash out fight against Mayweather Jr. in September or in 2015. I mean, who would want to see a Khan-Mayweather fight if Khan gets beaten by Collazo or if he has to go life and death with him. Let me remind you, Freddy Hernandez whipped Collazo, and Hernandez has lost 6 out of his last 7 fights. We might as well have Khan fighting Freddy Hernandez, because we’d at least be getting the guy that easily beat Collazo.

“Luis Collazo is obviously coming off of a high with his spectacular performance against Victor Ortiz,” Schaefer said.

I don’t know about that being spectacular. If I remember correctly, Ortiz quit in his previous fight against light welterweight Josesito Lopez in losing by a 9th round stoppage, so I’m not too impressed with Collazo beating a guy who Lopez beat in 2012. Heck, Ortiz didn’t even fight in 2013.
