Khan brags about sparring with Ward and Angulo

khan454By Scott Gilfoid: Floyd Mayweather Jr. might want to have second thoughts about fighting Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) on May 3rd, because Khan is bragging about having sparred with Andre Ward and Alfredo Angulo and taken their best shots without dropping for the 10 count on the canvas. I haven’t heard Ward’s account of the sparring sessions with Khan, but I’d be interested to see what actually occurred during them, if they actually did take place.

Here’s Khan on his facebook this week describing how he stood up to Ward and Angulo’s power “Another example Angulo and Ward have hit me with big shots and I’ve stood in front and not gone down. They carry 25 lbs over me and are big punchers. This is because I’m at my natural weight. It’s in the fans hands who they want to see me fight.”

That sounds very impressive. I guess Mayweather may need to scratch Khan’s name from his poll to pick out his May 3rd opponent, because Khan sounds scary now.

Khan says he’s a much different fighter now that he’s moved up to welterweight, because he’s not killing himself to make weight for the light welterweight division any longer. Basically, Khan sees his past chin problems being caused by him trying to fight in weight classes that left him drained after he made weight. Khan was knocked out in the 1st round by Breidis Prescott in 2008 at lightweight.

Khan’s excuse after that fight is that it was too hard for him to make weight, and that left him vulnerable to Prescott’s shots. I can respect that excuse. Khan then moved up to 140 and was knocked out in the 4th round by Danny Garcia in his 8th fight in that weight class. Khan just barely dodged being knocked out in his fight against Marcos Maidana in 2010, and you can make a very good argument that Khan would have been knocked out in that fight if referee Joe Cortez hadn’t been such a big factor during the last three crucial rounds.

If Khan has developed a chin at 147, then he might be a problem for a lot of fighters in the weight class. I mean, if he really sparring full title with Angulo and Ward and took their best shots for 10 hard rounds of sparring, then Khan might have developed a chin now that he’s supposedly at the right weight for his body. Of course, if Khan is just flapping his gums and bragging about himself without him having really been tested by those fighters’ best shots then I can see Khan having a short, miserable time in the welterweight division.
