Abraham-Stieglitz tomorrow in Germany

By Allan Fox: Tomorrow night two German based fighters will go at it with Arthur Abraham (38-4, 28 KOs) meeting up with the WBO 168 lb title holder Robert Stieglitz (46-3, 26 KO’s) in a fight in Germany. These are two solid problems. Neither of them of them are considered among the top fighters of the division by fans, but they’re still decent quality fighters. Abraham has a huge incentive to win because of how badly he was beaten last year by Stieglitz in their 2nd fight.

Abraham won their first bout of their three-fight series in 2012 in winning a 12 round decision. Stieglitz then did his homework and came up with the perfect strategy to beat Abraham in their 2nd fight last year by putting constant pressure on him until the fight was halted in the 4th. Abraham didn’t know what to do in order to negative Stieglitz’s high punch output attack in that fight, and so he ended up getting dominated. Had he been able to move around the ring a little bit, he would have been able to keep Stieglitz off of him. But Abraham isn’t the type to move around the ring, and that hurt him in that fight.

Stieglitz likely won’t bother changing his fight strategy for Saturday’s rematch because there’s no point in him making changes from what worked for him last time. If Abraham doesn’t have the game to fight back when his opponents throw a lot of shots at him, then there’s no real point in Stieglitz doing anything different.

A loss for Abraham on Saturday could be the end for him in terms of his career. Stieglitz is the weakest of the 168 lb champions by far, and if Abraham can’t beat then it’s end of the line. Abraham would be slaughtered by the other super middleweight champions Sakio Bika, Andre Ward and Carl Froch.

Saturday’s Abraham-Stieglitz fight will be taking place at the GETEC Arena, Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany.

If Stieglitz wins this fight then he’ll have easy sailing for the next year because he’ll be able to take a couple of optional title defenses before he’s forced to defend his title against a top challenger like George Groves or James DeGale. It’s also possible the World Boxing Organization could continue to rank Abraham at No.1 so that Stieglitz can fight him for a 4th time.
