Andre Ward against the ropes

ward56By Mark Havey: The number 1 fighter at super middleweight, Andre Ward dominated the super six tournament and has beaten the best boxers in his division. Ward is the perfect candidate to take the crowd as ‘Boxing’s biggest star’ once Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao retire.

Carl Froch was also a super six warrior. The tournament demonstrated everything that is good about boxing. it was a serious attempt to bring back the old days when they best faced the best. Since Froch met Ward in the final, we know they are the best Super middleweights in the world. the tough man from Britain was dominated over 12 rounds. Saturday we saw Froch easily beat his former conqueror, Mikkel Kessler. There is no doubt that he is now thinking of revenge over the only other man to have beaten him.

It isn’t often you see a man who is irrefutably the best in his weight class, backed into a corner by a man he has already beaten. Froch vs Ward II is a real possibility. The fight would be huge, yet there is one problem. Andre Ward wants the fight in America. Carl Froch feels that the fight should be in England, considering he travelled to America last time.

I like Froch and I am a big fan, but I don’t agree with the situation. He shouldn’t be in a situation where he sets the terms, but he is. he has more belts than Ward so feels he has the bargaining power. belts mean nothing these days. they look good around your waist. Manny Pacquiao vs Brandon Rios is testament to this. Both are without belts. They will be getting paid more than all of the world champion bar one. But Ward has a problem, he is too good. There is nowhere for him to go and he knows it. there was no reason for him to be at the O2 Arena. But he knows that he needs the winner. The winner doesn’t need him.

Eddie Hearn is likely lining up George Groves as a future Froch opponent. Froch has a huge fan base, Ward doesn’t. I don’t know if the fight will happen. Ward has never been keen on fighting abroad. But he hasn’t earned the kind of money you would expect. If the price is right, who knows. Froch is lucky to have found himself in the driving seat. I don’t think he, or anyone can beat Ward. The Cobra does seem to be improving with every fight, which is rare at his age. He has a better chance in the rematch. But Ward is too good.
