Chisora regains boxing license; fights on Cleverly-Krasniqi undercard

chisora34By Scott Gilfoid: Former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (15-4, 9 KO’s) has regained his British boxing license from the British Boxing Board of Control, and he’s now set to fight on the April 20th Nathan Cleverly vs. Robin Krasniqi undercard at the Wembley Arena in London, UK.

There still isn’t an opponent for Chisora to face on that date, and given the short amount of time before the fight date you’ve got to figure it’s going to be an easy 2nd tier opponent for Chisora to beat up on.

The April 20th card has already taken two huge hits with George Groves and Ricky Burns pulling out to join Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sport promotional stable. With those guys gone, will having Chisora on the card make up the difference? I’d say that’s a big no. I know some Brits really like Chisora, but I kind of doubt they’re going to decide to see the fight live if he’s facing a fodder opponent.

Chisora lost his boxing license last year due to the brawl he took part in against former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye at Chisora’s post fight press conference following his 12 round unanimous decision loss to WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko.

Chisora had been acting up even before that with him slapping Vitali in the face at the weigh-in the day before the fight, and then following that up by spitting water in Wladimir Klitschko’s face in the ring on the night of the fight.

It was just way over the top behavior by Chisora, and at the end of the day he still ended up losing the fight, so it was kind of pointless. He lost, and the Klitschkos have no interest in fighting him again in part because of how he behaved.

Chisora came back last year in July and was stopped in the 5th round by David Haye in a one-sided fight. Compared to how he looked against Vitali, Chisora looked flabby against Haye, and seemed to be carrying an extra 10 pounds of flab on his physique. Why Chisora had the extra weight is unclear because he had plenty of time to get in excellent shape, and yet he looked flabby.

Chisora said to Sky Sports “I’m glad this whole episode is finally behind me and I can carry on my boxing career in my own country.”

With Chisora having been out of the ring for the past 8 months, I’d be surprised if he comes into the fight looking like he’s in shape. I guess it won’t matter because his opponent isn’t expected to be a good one, but he’s going to need to try and keep his weight down in the future when he faces better opposition because he’s already lost four out of his last five bouts and he seems to be heading for journeyman status.

How can Chisora be an attraction if he’s losing 24/7? I think he’ll have to be put back on a soft diet of easy domestic level opposition for him to turn his career around because he’s failed miserably against world level opposition. Chisora has never beaten anyone in the top tier unfortunately. His 14 wins have come against domestic level Brits, and he couldn’t cut it when he was stepped up a level.
