Schaefer: Guerrero is going to be a tough fight for Mayweather

guerrero223By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer sees potential trouble brewing ahead for unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his fight on May 4th against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero on Showtime.

Schaefer points out that Guerrero hasn’t lost a fight in six years, and he’s younger than Mayweather by six years ago 29. Guerrero’s fighting at a really high level fight now after beating Selcuk Aydin and Andre Berto in his last two fights at welterweight.

Schaefer said to RingTV “It’s a big fight and I think that it’s a dangerous fight for Floyd…He’s [Guerrero] a fierce competitor, he’s a puncher, and he has speed, and he has skills and he has a helluva chin. If you add all of these elements together, it spells trouble for Floyd.”

Guerrero can be beaten, but you’ve got to take the fight to him by being aggressive. That’s what Orlando Salido did many years ago to defeat Guerrero by a 12 round decision. Salido got in Guerrero’s face and just kept hitting him without stop, and Guerrero didn’t have the power to match him. Mayweather isn’t going to be able to outwork Guerrero, but he can land the cleaner and more telling shots.

Mayweather isn’t a big enough puncher to stop Guerrero, but he put it on him by making him pay each time he opens himself up. Guerrero is going to give Mayweather a lot of opportunities to land his counter punches, and this is an ideal fight for him if he can stay active for 12 rounds.

What Schaefer doesn’t mention is the roughhouse tactics that Guerrero is capable of doing if the fight isn’t going his way. Guerrero turns things physical at times, and if the referee gives him a lot of slack to hold and hit and rabbit punch, we may see Guerrero use those tools during the fight to get the better of Mayweather.
