guerrero32By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. made a wise decision to go with Showtime/CBS for a six-fight pay-per-view deal because his fights are now going to be heavily promoted on the non-premium CBS outlets, which will enable Mayweather to reach many more fans than just those who subscribe to Showtime.

For starters, CBS will be advertising Mayweather’s first fight of his six-fight deal against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero during the NCAA tournament and final four, according to Dan Rafael. That means Mayweather is going to have a lot of potential new fans that could be interested enough to purchase Mayweather’s fight against Guerrero on May 4th.

Golden Boy Promotions will start the Mayweather-Guerrero presser on Sat or Sun love on CBS during the day. There will be a lot of sports fans that will see this and it could bring in a lot more money for Mayweather if these fans purchase his fight.

Mayweather’s last fight against Miguel Cotto brought in 1.5 million buys last year in May. Mayweather had help though with WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fighting in the co-main event against 40-year-old Shane Mosley.

Without Alvarez on the undercard, the Mayweather-Cotto fight likely would have brought in a lot less PPV buys because it wasn’t really an exciting fight due to Cotto’s previous beat down against Manny Pacquiao. Canelo will again be fighting on Mayweather’s undercard for his fight against Guerrero, and he’s expected to be fighting WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout. That should help make the card a big success in terms of buys.

Mayweather has to get off to a positive start with his six-fight deal with Showtime by beating Guerrero impressively. Mayweather needs to focus more on his defense for this fight because he was hit a lot in his last fight. Guerrero is someone that Mayweather can’t play around with because he’ll land a lot of shots, and give Mayweather problems if he tries to punch with him. In Guerrero’s last fight, he gave former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto a beating and puffed up both of his eyes in pounding out a 12 round unanimous decision.
