Macklin to fight in May; still wants Geale

macklin44334By Scott Gilfoid: Middleweight Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) says he’ll be back in the ring in May in New York City, USA. Macklin, 30, is hoping that IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale will be interested in fighting him in that month. I can’t see that happening.

Geale just finished beating Anthony Mundine in a tough 12 round fight, and he plans on facing tonight’s Felix Sturm vs. Sam Soliman winner next. If not one of them, Geale has already mentioned wanting to fight a unification bout against WBA champ Gennady Golovkin.

Macklin said on his twitter “@realdealgeale You want to fight nxt in. looks like I’m gona be fighting in NYC in May. the US?? Look no further. I’m ready, willing & able. Madison Square Garden, May, HBO…let’s do it!!”

I really hate to say it but Macklin still hasn’t redeemed himself from his losses to Felix Sturm and Sergio Martinez. Macklin has lost two out of his last three fights, and only win was against former junior middleweight champ Joachim Alcine.

I don’t like to see fighters that haven’t earned title a title shot to keep whining about wanting another title shot. I mean, I could understand it if Macklin did something admirable like taking on and beating the likes of Brian Vera, Jermain Taylor, Dmitriy Pirog or Grzegorz Proksa, but he’s not going that.

All Macklin did was beat Alcine after having lost his two previous fights, and then started calling out Geale 24/7 for a fight. Why won’t Macklin fight Vera or Taylor? I think both of those guys would knock Macklin out, so I guess I answered my own question. It just looks bad to have a fighter get schooled and then he almost immediately starts asking for another title shot instead of working his way back to that position.

If Geale were to accept a fight with Macklin right now, he would be royally hammered by boxing fans for cherry picking his opponent. Fans want to see Geale fight the best, not someone that has lost two out of his last three fights and isn’t fighting the guys he should be.
