Ricky Burns vs. Miguel Vazquez in unification bout on March 16th in London
By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) will finally be getting back in the ring after many months out of action, but instead of accepting the challenge to fight the best guy in the 135 lb. division, Burns will be taking on IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 Ko’s) in a unification bout on March 16th at the Wembley Arena in London, England.
My thoughts on this fight is that it seems to be a move in order to get Burns another title so he’ll be in a better bargaining position in negotiations for a fight against Broner later on this year.
Obviously it will need to be much later on in 2013 because it’s highly doubtful that Burns will want to get back in the ring on May 4th, the date that Broner could be fighting on after he annihilates British fighter Gavin Rees on February 16th, and take on Broner in this fight. As such, we’re probably looking at October or November for a Broner vs. Burns fight, unless of course Burns gets whipped by Vazquez on March 16th.
I also have doubts whether a fight between Broner and Burns can be negotiated because I have a feeling Burns will ask for a King’s ransom before he’ll agree to the fight, and that’s just not going to happen. There’s no demand for a Broner vs. Burns fight in the U.S, because Burns is about as well known as the other as the other obscure guys that Broner has been destroying recently. So why give Burns a great deal when Broner can find another guy that’ll take less money that the U.S boxing public will see as about the same fight?
I think Vazquez is a better fighter than Burns, and no way do I think Burns can beat him. However, the fight is taking place in the UK, and I think it’s going to be really, really, really tough for Vazquez to get a decision in this fight no matter how great he looks. I just don’t see him being given a decision. Vazquez doesn’t have great power, so the chances are likely that the fight will go to decision and I don’t see Vazquez being given the nod.
People can doubt what I’m saying but watch on March 16th and you’ll likely see what I’m talking about. Vazquez will make Burns look bad and then likely walk out the arena the loser. In that case I don’t see a Broner vs. Burns fight as being worth it because Burns will have a tainted IBF strap, and that would make for a bad fight.
