Froch still making excuses for his loss to Kessler: “I wasn’t at my best”

froch92By Scott Gilfoid: For some reason IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) just can’t seem to admit that he lost to a superior fighter than him in Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) two years ago in the Super Six tournament. Instead of just giving Kessler the props that he should be getting for spanking him royally, Froch is trying to say he wasn’t in top form that night on April 24th, 2010 in Herning, Denmark.

Froch said to Sky Sports News “I wasn’t at my best when I fought Kessler and I am firing on all cylinders now, you have seen that when I ripped the world title from Lucian Bute and defended it against Yusaf Mack with a body shot [that] folded him in half like a deckchair.”

Oh brother, Froch is talking himself up after his win over a limited Yusaf Mack, who had drain down from 175 pounds to fight Froch without a catch weight at 168. Big deal, that’s hardly something to start crowing about as if he really accomplished something. As for the win over Bute, that was more of a victory based on Bute’s wrong-headed fight strategy rather than Froch being in better than he was in 2010 when he fought Kessler.

If Bute had just fought a smart fight, he’d probably have whipped Froch and there wouldn’t be anything for Froch to brag about. I still think Bute is the superior fighter than Froch, and I imagine he’s going to prove that next year when they meet up in a rematch.

It’s so sad though to see Froch giving excuses for his inability to beat the talented Kessler. Why can’t Froch just come out and say he got spanked by the better man? Froch isn’t firing on all cylinders now, he just got lucky with the Bute fight and then took on a fighter that had to drain down from 175 to fight him in Yusaf Mack. There isn’t any real improvement in Froch’s game from 2010 when he fought Kessler.

I actually think Froch was better than because he was a little younger and tiny bit faster than he is now. But whatever, if Froch wants to believe that he wasn’t as his best when Kessler dominated him in 2010 then so be it, but he’s kidding himself because if Kessler was in the ring with Froch the night that Froch beat Bute, we’d have seen Froch get beat again.

Kessler wouldn’t make the same stupid mistakes that Bute made by fighting off the ropes and only looking to land single knockout punches. Kessler is smart, he stays in the center of the ring, he moves, he uses his jab and he throws combinations. He’s not going to make the mistake Bute did by waiting to and one big shot and letting Froch hit him with an avalanche of punches all night. That was one of the worst performances I’ve ever seen from Bute because he basically handed Froch the victory on a silver platter by fighting such a stupid fight.
